Rotties are not good dogs for novice owners. It depends if they are well socialized as puppies. They can be excellent with kids and some other pets, but can be very dominant with other dogs (but not necessarily). They should be neutered/spayed if pets and they should be well trained in obedience for sure as you don't want a 90+ lbs dog that is out of control!! They are one of my favorite breeds (I own a husky/Rottie mix) and I have fostered many of them, but they are not for novice owners. Just like German shepherds and pit bulls and pit bull mixes, they need a lot of proper socialization, training, and structure.

Rottweilers are exactly as good as their owners. They were certainly bred to have a guarding instinct, and they are big, powerful dogs, but as long as they know their role in the house and are well socialised when they're puppies they are usually fine. Training classes and lots of exercise are key. I've known some really nice Rottweilers, and some really dangerous ones, and the difference is always the owners.

Very protective!! I have had a mixed Rott and German Sheppard and a purebred Rott and both were great with kids and other pets. I have yorkies and a little girl that was 5 when I got the purebred rott that was an adult and she played very well with them. She came from a home that had a toddler and would not even go near the baby when she had food in her hands but if she put the food down it was fair game :-). The baby would ride her like a horse. Unfortunately, they didnt have a yard for her to roam in and so I adopted her and she was a great addition to our family.

Rottweilers are not good around cats or ducks in my experience owning 4 of them. They seem to be good around kids but I would never leave a small child alone with them

Rotties are very good with babies, and other pets when you train them right. And they have a natural instint to protect their familey, especially kids. But they have to be taught to not get away with it. All dogs test their boundries, so when they do, correct them. For example, growling at a stranger: Quickly correct it with a firm and loud, NO!. and lie down. but, if you are considering a rottie, then take it to obediance classes as you would do with all dogs, or train it yourself.

From what I know, they usually are good with kids. It's best to research the certain dog you want before you buy it; see if it has any history of biting people, etc. And the breed is very protective, yes.
