The Army usually goes for at least a year, sometimes they get extended. My husband's first deployment to Iraq was supposed to be 6-12 months; they were gone over 15. Last time my husband went, his orders said 12-18 months or until the mission is complete (they were gone about a year). When Reserves or National Guard deploy, they usually train for 3 months, deploy for a year, then spend 3 months again winding down - so they can be gone for 18 months at a time.
Marines are about 6 months. Air Force is usually around 4 months, and my friend's husband who is in the Navy was supposed to go to Iraq for 8 months.
