i was reading a post where nightmares were a problem and it was thought it could be demonic i seen these two words repeatedly w/o looking them up im asking Q/A

It depends on your source. In the Middle Ages, when the terms were coined, there was disagreement. The more common view was that they were demons. The demons could take male or female form. The incubus was the name of the male form and the succubus the name of the female form. The visit of an incubus or succubus was believed to have corresponded with lewd dreams, nightmares, and sometimes a pressing weight felt across the body. In the long run, such visits by these demons could have negative effects on both the soul and the body, causing "melancholy," "sloth" and sometimes other kinds of madness. Some philosophers argued that the bad dreams resulted from natural causes, which gradually was agreed upon (but not for the same reasons as we have today). That said, the medieval names stuck, at least in the Romance languages. For instance, the name for nightmare in Italian is "incubo."

Incubi (male) and succubi (female) were demonic spirits thought to seduce innocents as they slept. Originally, they were used to explain the occurance of 'wet' dreams, or erotic dreams that had progressed to the point of orgasm in either sex. Later, they were blamed for everything from nightmares to pregnancies.
