What is a really good, affordable dog food for my Doberman?
Ok, I have been feeding my Dobie Purina dog food, bc thats what he likes. I hate it, but at this point, its too bad. I found out that on the Internet, not so much purina, but Iams, and other dog food companys where you can buy a 10 pound bag of dog food for $9, has dead uthanized animals, even cats and dogs! shelters send them to the dog food company. I always wonderd what happen to them?!

But any-whooo, whats a good dog food. and why? i will want your take on commercial dog food too, so tell me.
but remeber im not looking into pending more tan $25 for a bag, so go ahead and tell me. Also i have been subsituting every thing that he didnt have, or needed more of, and put it in his food, for example protein: i would make some sort of lean meat, or chicken. ( not raw) and give it to him, so hes healthy.

also, heres the link for the video of the dog food.

I had used Pedigree for years until one of my Dobies came down with allergies. I now use Natural Balance by Dick Van Patten. It is quite more expensive than the Pedigree (especially since I am feeding three Dobermans and a mutt), but the ingredients in the Natural Balance is superb. You may want to try the Pedigree since it isn't real expensive, but a little more than the Purina. All of my dogs did love the Pedigree, but it does have the corn in it.Good luck.

The cheapest food that is of a somewhat okay quality (better than IAMS and Purina, etc) is Diamond Large Breed Adult. It has a few small things in it which I don't like (such as beet pulp) but other than that, it is a decent food. I can get a 40 lbs bag at the feed store for $21. However, I'd actually recommend getting Chicken Soup. It is $30 for a 35 lbs bag, but it is an excellent, excellent food for the price. The other thing you have to remember is that if you are feeding a super premium food, you don't have to feed as much. My relatively inactive 65 lbs husky/Rottie mix only needed 2 cups of Chicken Soup a day versus probably twice that much on a cheapy food. My very active 65 lbs Malinois needed 3.5 cups per day and would have needed double as well. Basically, stay away from foods that have corn, wheat, soy, sorghum, etc. You don't mystery meats like "animal fat" or "animal bone meal." And a named meat source should be in the first 2 or 3 ingredients.

Nutro got bot out by MARS pet products, the same people who own pedigree. Before they sold out I would consider my pets on this food as a last resort but now I wouldn't feed them this if it was the last food on earth. There are a lot of pets that are having major health issues when fed this food. With that said I would feed my dogs Blue Buffalo. My dogs currently are fed this food and do wonderful on this food. Hope this helps and take care.

Wal-Mart's Ol' Roy brand comes in 3 different 2 flavors, and has a senior diet. Around here (North Carolina) it's 14.98 for a 50-pound bag.

They eat a lot. Buy the best nutrition you can afford in the largest bag and that needs to be lamb and rice or something besides beef....many dogs are allergic to the additives in beef, he is active so a little extra fat is ok while he is young. Then buy small bags of ONE lamb and add it into the other to suppliment the food. I do that for my cats and dogs. They do very well. If you buy the cheapest they will be hungrier and eat more and poop more so, buy a medium cost brand and a store brand is ok with no beef. Then add the ONE to it and give him vitamins every other day or so. You can give him veggies too. My vet says they are good for dogs and anything they want to eat like carrots or green beans is good for them. Also apples or anything like that too. So, if he asks, give it and see if he eats it. Good luck. The beef allergy shows up as small hair loss and patches of dermititis looking skin problems. Millions of dollars are spent each yr. on shots from this allergy. If you want to cook for him cook chicken with rice and add it to his dry food but it's not needed. A good dry food is best for teeth and digestion as well. Treats, look for beef free, chicken or plain old rawhide made in america. Also, I wanted to let you know that dogs do not need meat to live....cats do. Now that is a fact so additions of grain and vegetable is ok for dogs.

Canidae is a great all stages food that is fairly easy to find and one that won't break the bank.
