My god I was flicking channels this morning and saw this on BBCs Breakfast News show. Two old fogeys, 80 years old if they were a day, standing at the side of the road in a high-visibilty jacket and pointing (or attempting to point) a radar gun at passing cars!! I couldn't believe what I was seeing!!! And all in the name of "community policing" or something!!!!
I remember thinking what sad old b*****ds they must be with nothing better to do in life than attempt to do the police's job for them, either that, or they just wanted to be on TV! Speeding is wrong for sure, but if it was my granny out there with a hi-vis vest and a speed gun I'd be worried that some joyriding hoodie will jump out of his car with a baseball bat and start laying into her. This kind of thing is for the police - they're trained for confrontations. What happens when things turn nasty? Plenty of drivers take chainsaws and sledgehammers to roadside cameras - what are they going to do to two well-meaning old folks armed only with a hi-vis jacket? It's just asking for trouble. Wheoever thought up this idea needs shooting!

Speed guns are relatively unaffected by the potential hand shake from an old person. However if all fairness the idea of using old duffers to enforce traffic speed limits is laughable.
This county sucks, we have special constables, community service officers, parking attendants, CCTV, interviews for first time passport applicants, ID cars, pay per mile driving the list goes on and on.

This government would stoop to anything to collect money even putting pensioners lives at risk! they're hoping it'll cost next to nothing and motorists wont retaliate because it's old foggies on the guns, and I suppose installing two pensioners is cheaper than buying and installing two cameras .... and more flexible by telling the old fools how healthy it is and they'll live longer the more they walk about getting exercised.
