My mini-dachsund is almost 2 years old. He was in perfect condition when we bought him 7/4/05, but within a couple of months I started to notice that his tail lost almost all of its hair and his coat is very coarse and dry. I have tried changing his diet and shampoo, but it has never gotten any better. He is a very finicky eater (contrary to most in his breed) and the only food that I can get him to actually eat is Kibbles N Bits. I have tried more expensive brands that have more natural ingredients, but he won't eat them. Does anyone know if this is normal for dachsunds? What solutions have helped you?

You need to have this skin condition diagnosed properly at a vet . It could be thyroid, yeast infection or allergies.

allright. make sure you buy shampoo that does not has laurel sulphate in it!! this dries and irritates the skin. YOU HAVE TO GET HIM OFF KIBBLES AND BITS! look at the ingredients in the, isnt the first one corn, or corn syrup? gradualy switch him to a holistic diet, trust me this is the only way to go. also try treating him for fleas....the loss of hair sounds like it could be a flea problem. but the best thing for him is switching foods, i use eaglepack holistic select, other brands i recomend are california natural, innova, or wellness. mix the food 75% of kibbles, 25% of the good stuff for a week, then do 50% kibbles and 50% of the good stuff for a week, on the third week do 75% of the good stuff and 25% of the kibbles, and the fourth week use just the good stuff, whatever you decide on. but trust me, if he is hungry he will eat. he's so used to junk food he's not gonna want to switch, but decreasing it gradually will help. he also will eat less of this, cause it will fill him up more. im just concerned that if you keep feeding him kibbles and bits he's gonna not have a long happy life.

I would take him to the vet. He could have a thyroid problem.
