If you are giving cooked bones then yes those bones are bad for your dog but if given raw those bones are excellent for dogs. Bones should ONLY be given to dogs RAW, never COOKED.

The short answer is Yes, it's bad.
The long answer is chicken bones specifically, shatter into shards when chewed. Most dogs don't take time to chew their food so they can easily ingest a large shard which can cause some major problem when bones start poking around inside their digestive system. Blockages can occur, which means a trip to the vet and a date with a scalpel. Beef bones are less likely to shatter because they are much harder and there is considerably less danger with pork and beef bones as they tend to get slowly gnawed away. A powerful chewer can, however break off and swallow a large enough chunk to cause intestinal blockages. Even if this doesn't happen, beef/pork bones are very hard and will cause a lot of wear on your dogs teeth, which can lead to rotten and broken teeth down the road.
OK someone here is going to say this is bull, because wild dogs eat bones. To that I would say that yes wild dogs eat all types of carion that they find laying around. However, they spend a lifetime doing it and naturally chew the tough meat they find more. Your dog on the other hand has spent it's whole life sucking down, bits of kibble, canned food, and cheetos and have much different eating habits. Additionally wild dogs don't live for 15 or 20 years like domestic dogs do.
Go ahead and give Fido a beef bone or pork bone on occasion, but choose a bone they can't easily destroy. Small dogs get ribs, medium sized dogs can handle steak bones. Brutus, chained in you back yard should probably get a much larger bone like what they sell in shrink wrap at the PetSmart stores.
Now your girlfriends cat... well they LOVE chicken bones ;-)

No bones should be given to dogs if they are able to injest it. If they can chew and swallow it, then they should not have it. Contrary to what people believe, dogs cannot digest bone pieces. Whatever size of bone they swallow goes through their digestive tract. This can puncture their intestines or bowel or even their stomach. As a vet tech I have seen this happen. Terrible, painful way to die. A small dog could chew on a large beef bone and not bite any off. A large dog can bite off a piece of steak bone. Try the really big knuckle bones/soup bones that you can find in your meat department. Watch the dog and when it starts to bite off chunks or slivers, take it away. Never give any dog a chicken bone or a pork bone. They both break off leaving sharp ends.

Chicken Bones yes, they splinter and can cause serious damage.

Cow bones can too if swallowed whole. They can get caught in the throat so make sure you supervise the chewing of these kinds of bones.

Raw bones are great for your dog. Never give any kind of cooked bones.

My dogs eat raw bones 365 days a year, this includes poultry. No problems. If you research you will find that not one raw fed dog has died from choking on a bone, while there are several recorded cases of dogs choking on "dog food" and dying.

Dogs are still designed to tear flesh and crush bones. It is what they were designed to eat.

"Dog foods" have only been around for about 60 years. What do you think dogs ate before then? Meat, and bones, and whatever their people threw to them.

60 years is no way near long enough to change a dog's digestive system.

Dog's have been chewing on bones for millions of years. But, sometimes they'll swallow a little bone sliver that'll cause digestive problems. Just give bones that are the right size for the dog, chicken bones only for little dogs, cow bones could be for any size.

Ok we are talking about domesticated dogs now not their prehistoric ancestors here.

Chicken bones are very bad for dogs. Their bones are brittle and can break apart and cause stomach punchers and the death of your dog.
Cow's bones are just as bad as chicken bones! They can be chewed to the point where a chunk is chewed off and cause a blockage in the intestines.
They do make real bones for dogs to chew on but be ware that they are usually coated with some kind of flavoring to entice your dog. Can cause major stomach upset and are high in fat that will give your dog the runs!

Stick with safe toys and products made for a dog to chew on!

Chicken bones are soft and can possibly splinter and lodge and a dog's throat or digestive tract. Better to not give them these. Cow bones are much harder so less likely to splinter. Although my large dog once swallowed an entire dead bird before I could stop her, and had no problems whatsoever. She also swallowed spareribs and other types of bones - boy was she fast!

Please do not ever give a dog or cat a chicken bone. The bone is so brittle it will break off and choke them to death. Living in Los Angeles I was able to ask the butcher for a (beef) knuckle bone. It is filled with marrow. I have not found a butcher in Las Vegas who does this. With all chew toys and bones, rawhide or real its just common sense to always keep an eye on them.

the large bones like cow would be okay, but the chicken NO. the little bones like that splinter and get stuck in the throat, and they choke. ham bones are okay too. keep an eye on the bones, and when they start to wear out, replace them.
