Water. Water water water water water. Protein shakes aren't going to do you a lot of good if all you're doing in running on the treadmill, and you're not aiming to gain muscle. They might give you a little more energy to keep at it longer, but in my experience with protein shakes, it's just not worth the money. Drink a lot of water though, and natural fruit juices are good as well.

I would recommend water during the workout and a protein shake after.

It's best to have a protein shake BEFORE you work out. The protein will help to boost your energy so that you can work out more effectively.
But DURING the workout, it's best to NOT drink a protein shake. You should drink cold water...but what I do during working out is drink apple juice mixed with water...then I mix a bit of salt in it. I learned about that in a health/fitness magazine.

Both, but not just a protein shake, have a drink that will help you recover, such as "Surge" by biotest. Although it says to drink after your workout, sipping on this during your workout helps prevent some of the bloating that normally occurs

during a workout definitely water. if you want a protein shake have it about 20-30 Min's before your workout then your body can process some of the nutrients and actually use them. this is way better for you and you don't want to have th shake after EVER just stick with water!

As noted in the above article, protein during a workout has no impact on performance. A small amount afterward may contribute to muscle recovery.
IMHO, unless you're doing some real serious workouts, it probably makes no difference. Your normal diet is all you need.
