I've noticed this happen quite a few times to two of my cats. Once in a while, they would be fine, then the next minute they start walking backwards, like they are under something they don't like or there is something on their paws that are bothering them. As they are stepping back, they look cautiously around their front paws. Does any one know the problem? Or is it just a cat instinct?

As you know, cats will investigate anything that gets their attention. If they are outdoors, they have probably noticed movement while walking or they felt something on their paws that wasn't quite right and they'll often back up to the area where it caught their attention.

If indoors, this could be fleas in your carpet. If your cats seem to start avoiding the floor (going from chair to couch to table) when going through rooms, it is definitely fleas.

Are you using anything on the carpet or floor that smells like a deodorizer or spray? That may cause it. Cats are really into smells and chemicals aren't their favorite things. I would think on it. also, does it happen all the time or just now and then? Makes a difference to whether it's a big problem or not. They are funny and walking backwards and checking paws sounds like there is something they are walking on that they aren't liking. If you think of anything maybe try to switch it to a more natural thing or use less often or not at all. good luck....remember cats lick and wash a lot, anything on the paws ends up in their mouths and on their face and skin...they are careful what they get on their feet. how about the litter, is it a strong odor kind? Maybe a more natural one will work better health wise for the cats that is, maybe not for you. lol.
