If your Jeep isn't 4x4 then I wouldnt advise off-roading, but if you must then 1st or 1 is the best way.

I if the transmission has P R N D 3 2 1

I would consider the terrain being travelled....

If it is very rocky and you have a grade, consider 2 or even 1 to manage a level of safety and less wear and tear on your suspension.

If it is an open desert trail, I would keep it in 3 and keep your speeds to reasonable levels, the danger here are the hazards you don't see out there. If you go too far out and run int problems, you could be in serious trouble. Always travel with a least another vehicle when out in the desert.

Drive will automatically choose the best gear for the moment, but if you find it is shifting up-down frequently, put it in a lower gear, say "3", or if you are just doing some crawling, use "1-2".

Cherokees are very off-road capable even with 4x2. Off-road in 3...1-2 in tough areas like mud.

Drive carefully and put in 1 or 2. But keep it and make it four wheel drive. Remember Jeeps are bought, they are built by their owners!

Depends on what type of offroading your talking about. Since you have a 4X2 I wouldn't do anything extreme in offroading, but I would use 3rd, 2nd, and first only. You shouldn't be going fast enough to need overdrive or D when offroad. And always have a buddy with you in a 2nd vehicle, never offroad alone.
