For several years I have been told that my local police have damaging evidence against me. The evidence was not obtained by legal authorities. I do not know the exact nature of the material the police have or the reason why someone would want the police to have evidence against me. No charges or complaints have been filed against me. My lawyer has spoken with the authorities and they do claim they have evidence against me but will not tell or show her what material they have. Other people also know of the evidence being kept.

If they are building a case against you, they can hold it. If it is illegal material in any sense, they will never release it.

I have a hard time believing you have no idea what they are keeping however...
The police can keep anything someone "provides" them if they think it may be used as evidence in the future. If you are not being charged with anything you have no way of finding out what this "evidence" is, nor should the police have to disclose the information. You are only entitled to full disclosure by the police if/when you are charged.

Can you image if the police had to tell a murder suspect about all the evidence they have collected at a muder scene before charges were laid? It just doesn't make sense for them to do so.

Must not be too damaging or critical if it has been several years and no charges have been filed. If you're not a criminal or a person committing crimes then I wouldn't worry about it.
