sleepovers, parties at a bowling alley, parties at a skating rink, etc. I always loved having "Superstar," birthday parties. My friends and I would dress up in crazy clothes and do karaoke all night. We always had a blast.

I had a 50's karaoke party for my daughter ... everyone absolutely loved it.
1. All the kids dressed 50-60's style.
2. I hung old useless records for decorations, along with balloons and streamers. I drew a large juke box, colored it ... and hung it from the ceiling.
3. Rented a good quality karaoke machine ... with 50-60's music, then had a karaoke contest. The winner received a make-up kit.
4. Rented the movie "Grease".
5. Had a 50-60's dance contest ("Rock Around The Clock" is a great song for this) The best dancers received a 50-60's dance CD
6. The meal consisted of hot dogs, soda pop, fries and sundaes ... not healthy, I know ... but won't hurt just this once.
7. Her cake was in the shape of a record, with teenager figurines dancing on top of it.
I hope this helps ... I don't think you can go wrong with this theme, the girls loved it. :)

This is the toddler forum - but to answer your question - try a bowling party or if you have one at home serve, hot dogs, pizza or burgers, chips and soda - have a birthday cake and set up board games and video game stations for the kids to play. Have her favorite music playing and pretty much stay out of the way except when serving. If you can enlist another parent and act as house servants and less like parents so they are supervised but not fussed over. Most 14yr olds would also enjoy a local concert or a play at the High School. Just remember to be low profile kids this age need to feel like you are trusting their judgment even if you are there to chaperon. Good Luck!

Unless you want it to be a surprise, I would ask her what she wants to do or give her choices to choose from. Here are some of my ideas:
*Stay overnight at hotel, play games, swim, watch movies, and snack the night away. Have her invite a group of close girl friends for the big slumber party.
*Have a slumber party at home- they could go sledding, ice skating (if available) and then have hot chocolate and movies/games in the evening.
*If your daughter likes plays or musicals you could find a local theatre or high school that is performing one, then she could invite a couple friends and you could all go out for dinner, then go to the show afterwards. She could choose the restaurant and if there is more than one show going on in your area she could choose what show she wanted to see.
*If she likes sports you could take her to see a game somewhere like a college team, semi-pro team, or a pro- team, depending on the amount of money you are willing to spend. If you or she wants she could invite a friend or two.
*if you just want an original party, you could have her invite her choice of friends over in the evening and she could help pick fun games that you could all play together after her favorite meal or pizza and pop- then cake with fourteen candles- her choice of cake too.
I found that girls this age like to take part and choose what they like- they enjoy it more and feel like the pampered princess for just one day. Slumber parties always seem to be winners too. I don't think boy/girl parties are the best idea at least for a couple of years. Just some suggestions, I hope they help.

I'm turning 14 in three months, and I know exactly what I'm doing. I'm taking all of my friends out to the movies (without my parents..that would be embarrassing), then my parents are taking me out to dinner with my friends, then we are coming home where there are going to face painters, airbrush tattoo artists, balloon making clowns, and a DJ. All the girls will stay overnight and the guys will leave between 8 and 9. I know this may be too much for some parents, so maybe you can just do the movies or just do dinner or something. Good luck with your daughter! : ]

My daughter's father and step mother took them to get their hair done. Then, the girls dressed up and went out to a really nice restaurant. I think they rented some movies, and had sleepover. Last year (13) she had a pizza party, sleep over, movies. She liked this year better.

From the answer above sleepovers are a great idea, or a pool party if it's not until later on.

The best idea is to ask the 14 yo. Let her tell you what she'd like to do. Then you will be the super hero mom. I'm mom to 3 and asked with mine. It always went better when THEY chose.

Ask her what it is that she wants to do. Of course a sleepover, lots of snacks and most likely shopping or movie. It really depends on her personality and what she's into.
