Heck my friend is paid a minimum wage and the only hope he has of paying rent is the tips. Some weeks he has to trim the lawn and wash cars to make ends meet. The owner has made clear "the money is in the tips, so be good." He has been a good boy as far as I know and does not spit in the food or stick boogers in entrees like he did at the other place. Still there are some cheapskates that come regularly and wont tip a percentage but just leave the loose change, which is peanuts. So this being a high class restaurant he has refrained from leaving his DNA in other peoples food but has started lacing the main course of bad tippers with a super dose of the fast acting laxatives. The patrons now have to routinely rush for the toilets before they grab their wallets. I told my friend to stop since I am the hygiene inspector and cant bear to witness the mess in the restroom at times. The other day I had five patrons playing musical chair in two stalls. How can I resolve the situation?

Wowie....your friend is my hero.....I was a waitress for a few years and I really depended on the tips to make ends meet. I usually made really decent tips so I know I was a decent waitress, but every restaurant I worked at had regular patrons who were known for grossly under-tipping or not tipping at all. I didn't mind the ones that were just hanging out and drinking coffee but the "high-maintenance" ones got on my nerves because they would tie up my tables and eat up a lot of my time I could have been lavishing on people who would tip decently and, like everyone else, my rent is due the first of the month. I tend to tip better and be very polite to the staff in restaurants I go to on a regular basis because I want to get good service and I have sense enough to know that money talks and being rude to the people who are preparing and serving me food is just plain asking for it. People who serve food work hard, they usually work a lot of nights, holidays and weekends and they depend heavily on tips to make ends meet. If you eat at a restaurant on a regular basis and you don't want laxatives in your food then you should tip the standard 15% (at least!) and be pleasant to deal with and, no, it isn't right, but that's the real world! I personally never had the nerve to do anything like that but I have unscrewed salt shakers and "spilled" soup on a few super obnoxious non-tippers! Ha ha! I noticed that church people on Sunday afternoon are some of the most demanding, rude, picky, messy cheapskate pigs to ever have to wait on!

If you are the hygene inspector, then you are in a position of authority to report him. If you don't report him, you are part of the problem.

So here is the answer:
NO it is no O.K. nor is it funny or proper in any aspect. Your Friend agreed to work minimum wage + tips. If he isn't very good, he won't earn tips. That is his choice, not the patron's choice.

Some people are stingy with tips. part of it is cultural, I met a gal from a foreign country who was disgusted with me when I tipped 15% - 20%. She thought I was being foolish giving my money away.

I have seen good waiters and waitresses who worked their butts off and took all types of criticism in stride and kept on providing excellent service. When that happens, the other patrons in the restaraunt typically tip extra high. So I doubt one cheapskate is worth the risk.

Sounds like your friend is just a sicko. First Laxitive, what's next? Date rape drugs in a girls food if he hits on a chick that snubs him? how about poisoning his coworkers to get a promotion? He sounds like a bad person to me that should not be in the service industry. Perhaps he should be cleaning floors and toilets for minimum wage instead with no opportunity for tips.

T.I.P. means To Insure Promptness. If you tip well, you get good service the next time, if not you go to the back of the queue. Has your friend been giving OUTSTANDING service to the poor tippers, or is he a lazy bum who expects a handout just for carrying food from the kitchen to a table? A good waiter does a lot more than that. A poor waiter can't even do that right and deserves no tip.

First of all, I think you're likely a troll, but let's pretend I believe you for a second. If your friend wants to be fired and arrested, then by all means he should go right ahead, but he should know that the patrons aren't necessarily cheapskates. I tip according to service. Earning a good tip isn't just about not doing bad things, it's about doing your job well. Does he make sure that the water glasses are filled, table and silverware are clean, orders are correct? Does he come to the table in a timely manner and serve the food hot (if he is a server as well)? Is he knowledgable about the menu? My ex used to tip a quarter to waitresses who ignored him or talked to their boyfriends while at the table. You have to earn your tip. Don't expect to get something for nothing.

LOL As much as it might be tempting, it's not a good idea as in the law books throughout most of North America the slipping anyone a laxative without their knowledge qualifies for assault.

If your friend continues to do this, he might start offering Immodium mints before the patrons depart.

I would think people would figure out what's going on after a while. Or they might think something's wrong with the food and not come back. This could mean many people lose their job including you. So I'd tell him to stop or else you will notify your boss. If he doesn't stop tell the boss. But what if people are stealing your food in a shared living environment and you take chocolate wrappers and put ex-lax in it and put it where you normally put your food?

Aside from the fact that he is giving them medication and they could get very serious cases of dehydration for obvious reasons?

No matter where you serve there will always be people who don't tip well, tell your friend to quit being a child and deal with it like an adult.

its a amusing story,i think this whole tippingsystem is very close to corruption, and
it works boths ways, some waiters van be very
intimidating to poor tippers,on the other hand there are people, who really are in a position to
be generous, but it will never cross there mind, becouse they are egoistic, selfish persons.
but it can never be a excuse to tamper with the food.
i think this whole tipping system should be forbidden by law,and restaurant owners should be forced to pay decent wages.

Tell him to STOP!!
that is immature and dangerous if he gets caught or the customers complain they will eventually catch him or get run out of business because of bad food!
Tell him to talk to the regulars about the tips they leave. Or stop complaining and hurting other people.

If he needs more money, tell him to get a different job. Besides, since you're the hygiene inspector if anyone finds out that he's doing this you'll both get fired since you know about it.

Let him know that these people will think the food is making them sick and stop coming all together...leaving him with even less money! Grow up, give better service, and give people benefit of the doubt (ie they may be struggling with money also)
