Too bad they let tards like the first answer on here, that said the Army and Marines aren't that different in many ways except the Marines are just better at what they do. The marines are essentially a part of the Navy, they provide all the security for naval ships whether docked or at sea. They are a smaller group than the Army but perhaps more elite, but essentially they do the same types of operations mostly. The marines are as far as I would put it kind of like the Navys Army if that makes sense.

The Air Force and Army operate from fixed, land bases. The Navy and Marine Corp are the United States' forces of forward projection. They can go by ship anywhere there are international waters and sit there as long as they need to, ready to land and hold that landing area. The idea is to let the enemy know that we are there and ready to land if need be (Intimidation). The Air Wing on an aircraft carrier is larger than some nations' total air force.

The Marine Corp is not a occupying force. They are supposed to be used for initial assaults from the sea.

It is the job of the Army and Air Force to come in afterwards and occupy and hold the objective for long periods of time. The Marines are then pulled out and are ready to move on to the next target from the sea.

The Marines are often referred to as the "Infantry of the Navy." Marines specialize in amphibious operations. Their primary specialty is to assault, capture, and control "beach heads," which then provide a route to attack the enemy from almost any direction. The Marines have their own air power, consisting primarily of fighter and fighter/bomber aircraft and attack helicopters. Marines can be deployed faster than the army. There are no doctors, nurses, or enlisted medics in the Marine Corps they use the Navy.

The Army's main function is to protect and defend the United States by way of ground troops, armor (tanks), artillery, attack helicopters, tactical nuclear weapons, etc.

The Marines specialize with Land, Sea and Air warfare where the Army is traditional more of an ground force. They Army is a larger in size. Both have Special Operation Forces for examble United States Army Rangers, US Army Special Forces (green berets) Marine Recon etc.

Don't listen to some of these non military people trying to give input. The United States Military gives their all in battle. The Marines don't kill more, we are all excellent at what we do. I was a US Army Ranger for 3 Years, Thats special operations, we are highly trained and we destroy our enemies, all branches of the military are highly trained and destroy their enemies, one isn't more "bad ***" than the other, we are just trained in different areas of warfare.

For US and UK, Marines are the base of their military power and the role of army, specially when invading other countries is the second line of jobs. Even the Air Force depends on the Marines for their overseas missions.
