You don't need to buy a bird of prey to start falconry - just join your local falconry club and they will teach you with their birds. You can gain knowledge on their care there and find out if falconry is really for you.

As a beginner falconer, (assuming you are in the US) you are allowed to catch a passage bird, that is an immature wild BOP that already knows how to hunt etc. You can have a red-tailed hawk or a North American Kestrel. If you are an apprentice, which you should be for 2 years ... your master falconer will help you acquire your first bird.

Don't contribute to the imprisonment of falcons, they are fine in the wild. I kinow they are flown every day but when they're not being flown they spend their time tied up.
