Well first you should know that acne can cause various types of scarring. And obviously the treatment differs with each type. hence discussing with a dermatologist is vital.

A common problem that occurs with scratching the acne is hyperpigmentation (skin darkening) and/or obvious scarring.

There are some medications available for hyperpigmentation in the form of ointments. They act by decreasing melanin in that area. But their efficacy is controversial.

Surgery is also a mean of treating it.
It is important to understand that if the scarring is not bad then both the scarring & pigmentation may slowly disappear. so you will have to carefully discuss with a dermatologist to know benefits & complications of dermat surgeries.

A number of surgical options are available.
Collagen injections.
Derm-abrasion (under local anesthetic removing the superficial skin with a high speed brush)
Laser- though it has gained a lot of hype but its still a grey area coz there are some concerns that it may cause more hyperpigmentation and/or long term dry skin.

Here is a very informative article on acne scarring..

There are ointments available made specifically to reduce the visibility of stretch marks. Stretch marks are actually scars. Maybe this is worth a try. Go to the drug store or beauty department of a department store and ask about it.
