Yeah sunflame.....I hear ya. I'm not a big fan of tribal or of people putting foreign script on themselves but if we all wore the same style of tattoo what a boring world this would be. With Old School, New Skool, Traditional, New York Style, Black /Gray work ....and all the others styles available I don't really understand ...but I do respect your right to tattoo big old black stripes and patterns on your skin if you want......or your right to tatto your personal mantra in Eskimo across your back....what you do with your own skin is your own business. If it makes you happy then I'm happy for you. I do wish that so many people wouldn't get flash off of the walls and have just anybody ink it on them. As I found out the hard way it is so much better to use a custom tattoo artist and collaborate on a design unique to you. You will have to wait a little longer and pay a little more but you will be so much happier with your ink.
To make a long rant short....this is about personal choice. Not all people choose to drive cars.....some drive trucks....some motorcycles. Not all people own dogs......some like cats....others horses .....or ferrets. I say put on your skin what makes you happy and don't worry about what others think ....
PS In the immortal words of Rodney King "Can't we all just get along"......lmfao

I see most people say that you should be able to get a tribal tattoo even if you are not associated with a tribe. I think that is wrong myself. Part because of the fact that I am Native and different tribes associate different tribal tattoos with their tribe. In a way, it can be taken as oh...disrespect, but there has been countless examples of disrespect towards Natives that by now, kinda seems like whatever. Tribal tattoos were once only specified towards a certain Native tribe. Now a days, they could be anything...from butterflies to dragons. Most tribes, if you are Native, and you get a tattoo request that you get a tattoo that describes something from that tribe. May it be some kind of writing, drawing, etc. And most want you to only have tattoos that coincide with that tribe.
The whole tribal tattoo in my opinion has been over done. Why not get something unique? When I finally save enough money to get mine, it will be something of my tribe, most likely my name or something that is symbolic of my tribe.

They always strike me as a lazy way to get a whole lot of ink done in one go. You're quite right, people are willing to go get other horribly cliche tattoos which have no meaning, I dislike those too. I think a big part of the problem is that tribal pieces on people who quite clearly aren't part of that tribe are generally associated with meat-head type guys who wanted a tattoo to look tough but didn't want to go for anything girly, like pictures. But it's up to the individual, if you want to get a tribal piece it's your body and your choice.

To me tribal is just another style of tattooing. Like old school, or portrait. Some people like it , some don't. I don't have any, but every day at the shop someone is getting it.
I have seen many butterflies on many women. Lots of stars, swallows, and hearts. Some people just like it, even still. I am a huge tattoo fan. So, i don't look down on people's ink. Calling one style of tattooing over done, and not another is kind of wrong in itself. People get lots of tattoos everyday, of just about any symbol you can think of.

Let people do what they want to do. I personally don't have a tribal, but rather a sun on my back (my middle name is Sunshine), but I don't condemn others for what they choose to put on their bodies...they're the ones that have to live with it.

i totally agree. i don't think that tribal tattoos are very appealing in the first place and i would love to see more artists turn down people who want to get meaningless tribal tattoos. my artist won't do tribal at all, ever and i am so happy for that. whatever. let them ruin their skin and waste it on crap ink. i'm proud of my tattoos and i know that i didn't get it to look cool or whatever.

who ever said you have to be in a tribe to get a tribal tattoo... thats dumb. its like the skull tattoo, lots of people get them, they make them their own. they arent dead, so why a skull??? the same reason, they wanted it, and what does it matter to you.
