Yes. The worst that will happen is he will pass out. But the good thing about that is that they start to breath normal when they pass out. ;) He is probably doing it to get a reaction out of you. Just ignore him, unless he cries for more then an hour. Most kids will do what they know works to get moms attention, so if you ignore the behavior, usually it will get better. If it doesn't talk to his doctor about it.
I knew a kid that would hold his breath until he passed out. His doctor said it wouldn't hurt him, and just to let him do it and soon enough he stopped because he wasn't getting a reaction out of mom. When he passed out, mom would pick him up and put him in bed and leave him alone. He learned soon enough that this technique wasn't working and the behavior stopped.
Start doing a normal routine for bedtime. Set a time that is bedtime and then start telling your son that bedtime is coming up. Try a bath or reading a book before bed. Hold him for a minute and tell him that it is almost bedtime. Within a week or so, your son will know that it's bedtime when you start the routine each night, and it should get easier. Sometimes kids just don't like bedtime. They will fight the process, but once they learn that you won't give in to them, they will just resign themselves to the fact that it's going to happen.
Good luck and I hope things calm down for you at night!!!

i tried the bedtime routine for only a week and now both my children go to bed OK,1st we have a bath, then a drink and biscuit, then we go upstairs to brush our teeth, then we all sit together on mum and dads bed to read a story, then its tuck and kiss,by this time i sit at the top of the stairs to greet and put back to bed this could be up to 9 times at 1 point but now its just a couple,if u look at your child when he is making all the noise i bet there are no tears like mine did , they just made alot of noise and then the little 1 wud copy , now its noise free, but u do have to be strong to be kind.

Yes. If you don't react to the drama now, there will be a lot less drama in the future.
