I live way out in the country, over 150 miles from a vet. The closest vet wants $300 to put my 15 your old sheppard to sleep. She is really starting to suffer. Is there any humane way I can do it myself. Please animal lovers, don't scold me here. The dog is old, she had a great life as evident by living 5 years past the average for her bread. I love my dog and wish to end her suffering painlessly. I have no resources to do it at the vet, so what other options do I have?

Hi everyone. Since the area I reside in has a lot of horses, I found a "horse call" provider that will come on site and do it for $80.
To the lady stating I should have a pet if I could not afford it.......well I can afford her, I did for 15 years and spent at lest $25,000 over the life of this dog on vet care etc. I'm old myself and the $300 was not the major problem, it was getting her to the vet 150 miles away. I would walk through fire for my dog, but I am also sane enough to know that when an animal is suffering, it's not sane to prolong this for myself. That is selfish and cruel. This is about the DOG not ME

You have a few options to explore here. First, contact the nearest animal shelter. They should be able to do it, or give you the number to a more reasonable vet.
Another option is to contact a horse vet. They can come out to your house and do it there. I'm assuming you have some land, so you can bury your dog on your property. All you would have to pay is the $30-$50 "barn call" and the euthanasia.
The vet is charging you so much because he must pay for the shot, the office visit, and the disposal of the remains. The disposal is what is running the bill so high. You can call him back and see if the price is different if you take your dog home to bury.
It's a sad thing all the way around, but there are other options besides needless suffering or a bullet to the head.
Personally I would contact a horse vet and have it done on my property near a pre-dug hole.

You didnot mention what your pet,s illness is. Is it old age? I am so sorry for you.I sure you are heart-broken having to make such a decision. Fortunately when may lab was hit by a car and had to be put down by our vet, she didnot charge me anything. Generally if you have to go so far away for a vet, look in your telephone directory. You might find a more humane vet. if you have a pet store nearby, you might want them to suggest.vets or another option. I would never suggest that you kill your dog, I believe that it would probably be very traumatic for you. one option would be your local dog pound. But, it is probably about the distance as your vet is. I would ask them the procedure that they generally use. I believe it is an injection, not painful and is humane. If you wanted to contact the humane society, SPCA, check the telephone book or get in touch with your local police department. They would probably be able to help you with the questions that you may have.Like I stated earlier, there should be other vets than the one that seems to take advantage of your decision. I am really so sorry and my heart goes out to you. Hopefully you will find someone that will help you. I know that you are making a very difficult decision and I hope you may find the humane way that you seek.

Doing it at abode is continually a good project to do, because he will be gentle there over the vet. What you want to do is detect an section vet which could do a house call. I truthfully have assisted a vet in a house call in the previous, and that is truthfully rather lots a lot less complicated than taking your dogs to a vet. you is only no longer able to kill a dogs with Ambien, do now no longer even attempt. What optimal vets use is Beuthanasia, particularly and overdose of barbituate. until eventually ultimately the letters DVM save on inclusive of your call, you is only no longer able to euthanize a dogs. particularly what is going to ensue in a euthanasia is the vet will draw up a blend of saline and beuthanasia, and gently, and that i do propose gently, insert the needle into the dogs intraveneously even as a technician holds the arm. Then, the vet slowly inserts the mixture, and the dogs will lose information and pass interior of a count number of seconds. The dogs does now no longer journey something yet a prick, and the sight of you'll make him ignore about all of it. the in elementary words question isn't even once you're waiting, yet is he? putting him out of his misery is what you want to save in ideas the following, now no longer how lots it pains you. He sounds like he has loved his time the following, and conserving him round on your sake is causing him soreness, something i'm particular you do not have in ideas. i lately had to help positioned down my astounding chum's dogs down, and that is of route a non violent journey, to make certain each of the dogs's soreness fade away.

I also suspect that the price involves disposal of the body via cremation. Our vet clinic has one cost for the euthanasia, and another for the disposal... many people in our area choose to take them home for burial (you need to check if it is legal in your municipality). I assume also, that if you are that far from a vet you must own some land to bury her on. Do you have cattle/horses?? Would your farm vet be willing to do this for you? Our large animal vets will put down farm dogs for our farm clients... then the only cost like someone else said is the trip charge and the euth fee.
Shooting (as horrible as it sounds) when done correctly is a viable option (and approved by most vets). If you have a friend who has good aim and is willing to do this for you, that is an option.
I would call the vet back though, and ask if that fee included disposal, and what the charge would be if you buried her.

Umm if this post is serious than I advise you SERIOUSLY to not do any harm to your animal.
Im sure if you make a few phone calls and explain to the vets the situation your in they might be able to work something out with you. Maybe a lower cost than 300.00. Some of them can work out payment plans with you where you pay a little amount of money each month. You really need to have the vet handle this. They are a professional and know what they are doing. Do not use the excuse that the vet is too far and you cant afford it. You didnt say where you live, I cant imagine living that far from a vet!! Especially if you have a pet! Please do some research on this. Go online or go in the phone book and call different vets and explain your situation to them. Under no circumstances should you take the matter into you own hands.
In the future if you cant afford pet costs than dont have a pet.

Well, I am sorry that your in this situation. It's so hard sometimes
to do the right thing, especially when money is a problem.
The reason people suggest taking them to the vet to put them
down, is because of the humane way that it is done. Your dog
won't feel a thing. They put them to sleep first.
Given your situtaiton, I think as long as the dog does not have
to endure any more pain, I think your doing the right thing.
Spend the $80.00 and put the dog down. I just hope that this
method is painless for the dog.

Well I suppose you can wait until she dies's on her own, but I think that is cruel. I can't believe a vet would charge that much money to put down a dog.
I live in a very populated area with alot of high income people and even the most expensive vet wouldn't charge that much unless that included cremation and putting the ashes in a fancy jar.
check around for another vet if you can.

I am sorry about your dog. I dont think that there is really a humane way to do it on your own though. I would call the vet and see if there was any way she or he could arrange to come and get your dog for you.

This is one of the reasons that many people bring their dogs to shelters, because vets are charging to much to put them to sleep. This reason has been amounting to about 30% of relinquishment's if not more. Consequently shelter numbers look higher than what can reflect actual adoptable dogs, And even with these types of relinquishment's shelter numbers are 70-90% lower than they were 30 years ago.
I don't know what you can do legally that would depend on your state but I would not ask, lest you get arrested.

Call your humane organizations. $300 is way too much to charge for euthanasia. My vet charges $60.
