Your safety is jeopardized with no one to protect you.....

In remembering my Montana history, taking the law into our own hands starts with the best intentions and somewhere always turns ugly....remember reading about vigilantes? Be careful.
Virginia City, Montana was the center of Vigilante activity during the Civil War years. These men took the law into their own hands. They killed a score of men who, they said, were outlaws of various kinds. One of their victims was accused and "convicted" of nothing more than being an obnoxious drunk. "Conviction" consisted of the opinions of the men who led the killing at the moment. Their method of execution was usually strangling, not a merciful and quick hanging. It is said that they had to act thus and take the law into their own hands because the sheriff, whom they strangled, was the leader of the road agents.
As happens in Vigilante movements, the power of the organization was used for other purposes after the original problems were solved. There is evidence that the Vigilantes of Virginia City hanged a man who had his pardon from the Governor in his pocket, and they then proceeded to kill the Territorial Governor Thomas Meagher. They used their secret powers to discipline those of whom they disapproved, especially blacks and other "undesirables". As the cohesiveness of the Vigilantes began to disintegrate, it became difficult to know who was doing what.

I think citizens arrest is only effective for felony law. So if crossing the border illegally is a felony, then feel free to place anybody crossing the border illegally under citizens arrest.

That's what the Minutemen are doing, but it does have it's down side. You never know when our own government will side with these criminals, and bring you, the law abiding citizen up on charges. Look what happen to our brave Border Patrol agents when they tried to stop one of these illegal criminals. The good guys got thrown in prison for trying to protect America. It's a shame.

So you think that any person that has darker skin is automatically "illegal"? I have dark skin and if someone tried that with me I would press charges so fast they wouldn't know what happened. I have family in law enforcement, it came in handy when I was going through a divorce and other harassment.

First, how would you be able to verify their status. Second if you tried to ask me my status I would most likely tell to take a hike and stop bothering me or infringing on my right of not to self incriminate myself. Third if you tried to detain me unlawfully, you would be facing charges. Fourth, ah forget about it, my first reaction would be to flip you the bird and go about my business.

Well, how would YOU determine they were illegal? You cannot walk up to someone and say to them "show me your identification"....you are not the law.
Don't be so fearful - don't swallow everything you hear about the problem. Why don't you go apply for one of their jobs.....I hear the state of Nevada is having to use prisoners to pick the crops.....maybe you could find work there.
