I have heard people say that we shouldn't grade papers or test with red pen, why not?? The purpose is to make it stand out right? Why do so many people fear red ink?

there is some research that indicates using a red pen can lower a childs self esteem and what not, but most of my teachers use red pen and it doesnt bother me. to each his own i guess

some similar research suggests that using purple to grade may be more effective (i'm not exactly sure why, but i know i've heard that more than once)

I have never heard that it is bad to use red ink when grading papers. It is suppose to stand out so you know what you did wrong and so you can fix it for next time. I think it is best to use red or some other bright color to get the point across.

I've actually heard that from a few teachers. It was "suggested" to them that the poor little darlings' egos would be hurt from seeing red ink, so maybe they should grade in green or something. LOL

Is it ok to grade in red ink? It's ok by me.

I saw a psychologist on one of the news channels recently blathering about how grading with red ink will ruin a child's self esteem. Good grief... that it taking this PC dribble just way too far.

It's so our children won't "feel" like they got an answer wrong. After all, there are no wrong answers, just different right answers. If we make our children feel like failures, then they will be failures. If we raise children to always think that everything they think is right and they are never wrong, then we can all live happily in a world full of Hillary Clintons and Al Gores....which is what life in America is all about.....isn't it?????

OK...maybe NOT!

the color red can mean either achievement or failure for a child. because the majority of teachers use red ink they relate the color red to judgment.
