Because they're ignorant to the issue and they don't understand it, it's easier for them to judge and dismiss it rather than taking the time to actually experience it.

I have to say.. I am not a fan of NASCAR or any other oval racing.. BUT.. I'm a huge motorsport fan, so I feel that it's necessary to defend it here. If it's true that "anyone with a drivers license" can be a NASCAR driver, then why not go ahead and do it? If it's so easy, then you could be out there making millions for "driving around in circles". Sitting in a hot tin can, driving in the neighborhood of 200mph for 500 miles is no picnic. There are stresses on the body that FAR exceed any that a basketball or football player have to endure. F1 drivers have it even worse, because the cornering and braking forces involved are at least double what you find in NASCAR. The problem that I think some people (including myself) have with NASCAR is that they market it as more of a soap opera than a dangerous physically demanding sport. They show the drivers driving around in circles, looking pretty for the sponsors and sometimes fighting with one another, but they never talk about all of the training and preparation that go into being a driver. All professional racing drivers are athletes.. Period. Do some research before you make fun of something you don't really understand.

If the definition of sport is an activity governed by a set of rules and engaged in competitively, than NASCAR is certainly a sport, as are other forms of auto racing.

In most examples of sport, people can see the physical capabilities of the competitors determining the outcome of the event. This is difficult to see when the competitor is sitting in a vehicle. But there is no doubt that the drivers must have athletic skills and physical endurance to win, and in NASCAR they must also have mental sharpness and equipment success.

I like the reference, in the previous answers, to NASCAR being a motor sport. Motor sport, ball sport, winter sport, water sport, sport fishing, extreme sport, etc.; they are all sports, just different. Sport can come in many different packages and some people have a problem wrapping their mind around that.

So don't worry about people who have a limited capacity for understanding the broad scope of sport and don't feel insecure about whether they think NASCAR, or F1, or drag racing are sports or not. Just enjoy the show.

Hey, I am a big sports fan; but a new NASCAR fan. I'm just learning to understand and appreciate the sport. Others will too ... and if they can't learn, ignore them.

The people that don't think racing is a sport always cite the tired old "They aren't athletes, they're just driving in circles, etc".
Take the opportunity sometime and go through one of the driving schools at the various tracks, and drive one of those cars. First off, it's anything but comfortable. Wearing the helmet with the visor fogging up, the insulated firesuit to keep you nice and toasty warm in there, and the five-point harness constricting you to the seat.
I enjoyed every minute of it, driving about 12 laps in July at MIS, but came away with a lot more respect for the professionals that would drive 400-500 miles in an event.

To me I could care less what other people want to label it as. It's one of the most entertaining spectacles that involves intense competition that's available. The issue I have is the idiots (like nkendig187) that say it takes no talent and that "anyone with a driver's license can be a NASCAR star". That's like saying anyone that's played touch football in the backyard can be a pro bowler in the NFL or anyone that's played pee wee league baseball could be a major league all star. The hand eye coordination, feel for the car with the ability to communicate what's going on with it in a way your crew chief can make the needed adjustments and raw nerve that the elite drivers possess is truly a rare commodity.

I believe the reason is that in most sports the participants are visually active, and obviously acting within the realm of a team.

Most "sports" fans who denounce NASCAR do not realize the great amount of effort it takes to drive those cars, or the number of people required just to field them. They only see a car driving in circles (not a diifficult task on the average street) not realizing that it is the same as men running in circles, men running back and forth over a field or in a closed building. Or perhaps they simply discount it because there is no ball to follow?

I think it is because people speak without really thinking. Every sport is just a game. Someone will think it sucks and someone will be huge fan of it. Yes it is driving in a circle for a long time....with alot more involved. Football is trying to get piece of pigskin 100 yards to the other side. I love Football and I am a huge fan of NASCAR, but it is all relatively the same.

Thank You!
i have been told that it is not a sport, and i would LOVE to know the same thing. i personally love it and believe with all my heart that it is a sport, but i get in many verbal fights with people because they say it is not a sport, but it is.
everything they do is a sport, if ping pong is a sport, NASCAR is just as involved, if not more, i mean the g forces, and the heat, and the pressure, is so amazing, ur body needs with withstand all of the pressure that it is under. but if u ask other, they say it is not, that all they do is sit on their butt for 4 hours, and turn left, .i mean, yea they do, but the pressure, the heat, and not being able to call a TIMEOUT, or a POTTY BREAK, they got guts!!!

People dont see the point in driving cars for hours and going around a track for a certain amount of laps and they think its so easy but its not and etc etc. They just dont know what a great sport they are missing out on and all the great drivers and great racing.

as far as racing goes, F1 is a sport, champ car is a sport. Nascar is a circus, and indcar (IRL) is just pitiful. The best drivers in the world are in F1, and everything else is like the minor leagues. As far as nascar goes though, it is like the WWF of auto racing. Its a joke. They are too busy crashing into each other, throwing helmets, and climbing fences to be considered a real racing series

IT IS NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT A SPORT!!! The issue is that people that call it a sport are calling it something it's not. That is like call Clay Aiken heterosexual. He is GAY! Are you seriously that ignorant to say Nascar is the most interesting thing out there or does your TV only get one channel? Watching clouds move for four hours is more interesting than watching cars move for the same amount of time. There is very much danger in "ball" sports. You can break your neck, back, shoulder, you can even be shaking for the rest of your life like Mohammad Ali. He was a boxer, yes, but that is more dangerous than Nascar, too.
