Jesus supported gender equality very much. He revealed himself as the Christ first to a woman. He revealed himself first to a woman after his resurrectiom. He offers the the positions of co-rulers with him in God's kingdom to men and women.
As a teacher, he was kind in situations like the one you point out. However, he could also be forceful as when he spoke to the Pharisees. There is much you can learn about Jesus and his ministry from a book called "The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived", published by Jehovah's Witnesses. You can request it through this web site.

How I empathise with Martha! If my sister and I were in that situation I would be running around like a headless chicken, cooking and setting the table, and my sister would be serenely sitting at the foot of the teacher listening carefully to every word. But the gender equality issue has nothing to do with who did the domestic chores.
In Jesus' day, women were not allowed to receive individual teaching from the Rabbi's. Men, yes. Women, no. Jesus was revolutionary in this respect because he encouraged women to receive spiritual teaching. Remember the Samaratin woman at the well and how Jesus spoke to her? Not the done thing in that day and age. Yet here he is, in the home of Martha and Mary and he is actively encouraging them to listen and learn, giving them the opportunity to have one to one teaching. That's why this scripture supports gender equality. Jesus was way ahead of his time.
I wonder who did the washing up, though?

What do you mean by gender equality? I think this passage has nothing to do with gender equality.
Of course I do believe that Bible has stated the gender equality (read Genesis). But men and women have different role in community and women's role (nursing kids, doing household work) is NOT less important than men's role (providing food and protection). I feel some feminists seem to make women 'just like men'. Actually, they just look down or their noble role, which no man on this earth can take away from them.

Luke 10:38-42
"Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
I don't see what this has to do with gender equality.

The MESSAGE of Jesus was a "breath of fresh air" to a society filled with women told for centuries that they were second class citizens. We see this in MANY places in Scripture...
1. Luke 8:1 After this, Jesus traveled around from one town and village to another. He announced the good news of God’s kingdom. The Twelve were with him. 2 So were some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses. One was Mary Magdalene. Seven demons had come out of her. 3 Another was Joanna, the wife of Cuza. He was the manager of Herod’s household. Susanna and many others were there also. These women were helping to support Jesus and the Twelve with their own money... WOMEN supported Jesus' ministry.
2. Acts 2, Peter preached the FIRST Gospel sermon:
Acts 2:17 He said, “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Holy Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will have dreams. 18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on those who serve me, both men and women. When I do, they will prophesy.
3. The EARLY CHURCH: Acts 21:8 The next day we left and arrived at Caesarea. We stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist. He was one of the seven deacons. 9 He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
... Returning women to their prior condition seems to be one of the earliest departures from Biblical truth that eventually led to the creation of catholicism and ABANDONMENT OF TRUE NEW TESTAMENT CHRISTIANITY. Scripture makes it clear that ALL followers of "the Way" were gifted BY GOD to help spread the Good News

How about 1 Peter 3:1
"Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands."
Yeah, let's all listen to what a book written thousands of yrs ago in a male-dominated society has to say about women's rights.
I suggest people use their OWN judgement for once and stop reading these Iron Age codes of conduct. We now have scientific evidence showing that women are not only equal to men in almost all aspects, but are also superior in most others.

By God...
Men have been ordained to be the providers and executors of the plan of God for the home....
Women have been ordained to be the nurtures of home and servants to the plan of God....
Therefore, each gender has a purpose for their life......
Untile people have a peace with that...there will always be turmoil....
Sarah was spoken of as an admiral servant/wife....
And the reason why she stood out....was because she submitted herself to God....and allowed Abraham to be the "physical" master over her life....and she fulfilled her purpose of serving Abraham...but ultimatly fulfilled her purpose of being a wife...and mother....which she was subject to from God....
The scripture you are talking about .... can be taken that Jesus is telling the woman that Mary is fulfilling her duty...to set up...nurture...and serve....as she was ordained to do for that day..and that event they were hosting....
It wasn't so much talking about her serving as a "homemaker"...but as a servant of God...she was providing the needed accomodations to fulfill the event and plan of God for the day....
That is the misconception of gender equality....
It is not about who can or can't do what....
It is about fulfilling the purpose that GOD has placed on your life...
Whatever He wants you to do....you should do....
But, they outline of a mans duties and a woman duties is to give you operating factors of how to function in life...
It is not to place restrictions on anyone as people tend to think.....

I guess it's saying that women don't have to be busy all the time cleaning and cooking to make a man talk to her or respect her? Is this for an assignment or something?
