When I used to run 50+ miles a week I would eat a banana a day and it seemed to help.

I'm wondering if there are alternatives to eating bananas for potassium. I know orange juice has potassium but fruit juices have a lot of calories too.

Although bananas do contain a fair amount of potassium, the following have more potassium per serving. Baked Potato (with the skin),spinach, acorn squash, lentils or split peas, kidney or navy beans, watermelon, dried apricots, prunes, dates, or raisins, orange juice and yogurt.
Vegetables like zucchini and collard greens have about the same amount of potassium in one cup as a medium banana. Additional foods containing potassium in lesser amounts, but still good sources, are: fish (salmon, cod, flounder, sardines, apples, cantaloupe, grapefruit juice, tomatoes, strawberries, lima beans, broccoli, milk, mushrooms, turkey, and beef. The follow site has a complete list of foods containing potassium, from a low level to high level.

Pot Clor (Potassium Chloride) solution should be available with chemists and medical shops but dont know whether you can get it without a prescription. Sports drinks have potassium too but whether you will get all that you need is doubtful.

Unsweetened orange juice will not have many calories and is a good option.

I'm not sure if u are only looking for foods to eat, but for someone who runs like that, I would recommend a website: www.elizabeths.unfranchise
Click on health & nutrition, then scroll to sports nutrition. All products they list have a great source of nutrients including potassium. These are products formulated for athletes, Joey Cheek, an olympic gold winner uses his own formula which is listed as: Isotonix Champion Blend. He says he wouldn't be without it.

Of course, bananas, and a small cup of OJ doesn't have many calories. You can also get potassium from broccoli--or you could take supplements. If you take a multi-vit, potassium may already be in it (multi vitamin + minerals)

BANANAS ARE GREAT, YOU CAN GET MORE FROM RAISINS AND BAKED POTATO WITH THE SKIN. DRIED PRUNES ARE HIGHER IN POTASSIUM ALSO. YOU CAN BUY IT IN PILL FORM WHERE VITAMINS ARE SOLD. GO BY WHAT THE VITAMIN SUPPLIER STATES PER DAY. YOU CAN GO HIGHER BUT TOO HIGHER A DOSE LEADS TO ABNORMAL HEART BEATS. ALL FRUITS HAVE POTASSIUM AND THIS IS THE BEST SOURCE.
