i just want a family pet that is pretty content with playing with another dog in the arcrege or backyard it has at its disposal. i want a dog that is always happy to see me when i come home from school and always ready to go to the dog park or a 1 hour walk in the morning and evening. i want to paly feach, frisbee and an ocational game of tug o war. i dont want a small yappy dog , but i dont want a dog who can easly run over me or knock me down. i want a dog who will protect me if i needed it to. i want a dog who will be like a gardian and a best friend. it is ok if he chases birds and squrrials. which breed is right for me, and dont say a sheep or a cat please.

There is a little-known breed called a miniature australian shepherd they are not chihuahua or pomeranian size but the are still small enough that they wont hurt you or your kids by accident. They are about 14 inches tall and 20 - 30 pounds in weight. Though miniatures are often yippy and prone to biting this is not the case with this breed. I don't believe a golden would be good as they will mos likely not protect you from an intruder. Mini Aussies do bark at everyone, other than family, that enters their house but you can train them not to if you want. They may growl at a stranger if they are physically threatened but they do not bite. My mini will bark at unusual sounds or people in the yard but he is unbelievably affectionate with the family! Their bark is not at all yappy and is actually fairly deep. We have a 1 year old that visits every week or so and he is smothered with kisses from the dog no matter how rough they play with each other. My 3 year old son has tons of energy and is always pestering the dog to play fetch or tumble around together ad my dog has never one even growled or barked at him - he has never even looked him in the eye (a sign of a threat)! He has an abundant supply of energy and is always ready to run in the yard - in fact we are looking to put him into agility soon. But he does not have as much energy as the standard australian so he's easy to deal with even if you don't have too much land or time to excercise him. I wouldn't reccomend a sheltie just because a few of my neighbors have them and they have bitten not only me but my children more than once - I wouldn't risk it if I were you. Play nipping is an annoying habit that can be broken but shelties have a tendency to actually bite from my experience. My mini aussie as well as my last few have all been housebroken in less than a week. My last one in just 2 day - no exaggeration! He's still a puppy and he already knows sit, lay, shake hands, jump up, hug, roll over, come, spit, jump through a hula hoop, walk, and he's working on spin around! They are protective of their family in a good way. And as long as they are exposed to them as a puppy they LOVE other dogs! My aussies get along with dogs of any sizes, shapes or colors! When you play outside they love to try to "herd" the family into one spot then they lay in front you to "protect". It's very cute. Though they don't chase cars they ARE shepherds so they havbe a tendency to chase birds and squirrels but they wont eat them like other dogs do. Based on the information you have given i believe that this is the best breed for you. good luck!!!!

It sounds like that the type of dog that you would like is a yellow lab or a golden retriever. They are loyal to the family they live with and protective. They love to play fetch and go for walks as well. Plus they have the yard to run around in for exercise. Good luck with the dog you choose.

Maybe a border collie. They are a very happy dog and extremely easy to train. They love to play fetch, and can be quite acrobatic while catching a frisbee. They are also very protective. We taught our daughters dog to bark when anyone enters her room while she is sleeping. She also will also bark and try to get between us when we are playing with our daughter, thinking that she is getting hurt. She has been a great dog for our daughter, who was 10 when we got her

I would go with a German Shepard. They are smart dogs that are easy to train. They are very quiet and not at all "yappy". They are good protector dogs and they love to play. All in all, a great breed!
We had one that would get along with all of our other dogs/cats until you told it to sick-em then it would run right after them. You could then tell him, "good boy, now go make nice" and he would trot up to the dog or cat and lick it and lay next to it. We never had a problem with our German Shepard.

LABS...............We've had ours for 7 years, she's a chocolate, smart, loyal, ferocious growl that will make a stranger think twice about coming around. You will fall in love with one......trust me.
