I try to ignore them first. Then I try to insult them, but with all due respect, and as nicely as you can insult some one.

The best solutioon is to tell that person that they need to apologize. Know that everyone has different days.
They may have just had a terrible day. If you insult back the gap between persons gets wider. I was taught to always give a soft answer to people cuz I may have to eat them some day. My answer is to be as gentle as you would want back. If you care less for the person, walk away quietly, then their words will eat at them, but you are the bigger person. So much nowadays everyone want to be the one who gets the last word. Again, I was taught to have friends, you need to show yourself as friendly. This from a 49 year old man.

Like when someone insults you about your spelling and grammar? If you are out of school, go back. If you are still in school, pay more attention. But to answer your question I find it works more often to just ignore it and never let it show that it had any effect on you.

It depends on the insult and the environment and who is doing the insulting. Most of my family insult each other in a playful way.

If you are a wise christian, ignore them and bide your time, hide in the bushes, talk at the watercooler about their dyslexic husband, or simply spread gossip that they're having an affair with the office janitor.

It works for me.

I either laugh or ignore it, or encourage them, that way it diffuses all of their later insults.
