I was in the Army for 8 years. I was ill prepared for boot camp. All my friends from high school went in the marines Here are my suggestions:

You have a year, and that is plenty of time. Start running...at least 4 times a week. 2 days run for speed, 2 days run for distance. Find a school that you can use the track. 4 times around a track like that is a mile. You need to be doing 3 miles in around 18-19 min. or less to be comptitive.

Pushups/sit ups. Do them EVERY DAY, twice a day to muscle failure - meaning you can not do another one, even with a rest. Time your self now, see how many you can do in 2 min. do this once a week to track your progress.

Pullups. THESE ARE IMPORTANT. You need to be doing something to help your pullups everyday. Not necessarly pullups, but lat pull-downs on a machine for instance, bar-dips, military press, pull ups, row pulls, curls etc. Anything that develops you ability to do pull-ups. I now have a nephew in the Marines and he says they are not letting them "swing" (or use momentum) to get pull ups anymore. The are more dead style pull ups.

Learn to spit shine boots. Go buy some cheap combat boots at your local surplus store. Ket some kiwi polish. Get to working. Learn how to use a compass and map (you are going to do land nav. they will teach you how to use military maps, but be familiar with intersection and resection using a compass at least). you might brush up on some first aid procedures.

Thats about all. They will teach you all of this stuff too, but the more you know going in, the easier boot, mct and soi will be for you, the easier it is, the less yelling.

Make sure you workout. Try to complete a 3 mile run in about 20 minutes. Try to complete 80 situps in one minute. Get to where you can do at least 20 pullups.

Can you tread water and swim with all your clothes on?

Get a copy of the "Guidebook for Marines" and study it.

The physical part and studying are easy. The mental toughness is difficult to prepare for, but that is what they are going train you for. Most of boot camp is mental.

R. Lee Ermey did one hell of a job in depicting a Marine Corps drill instructor in the movie "Full Metal Jacket."

Good luck to you! Ooh-rah!

It looks like El Gato here has it down for you - good advise.

If i might suggest a few other things. Read up on USMC history, learn who Chesty Puller was, and everything about him. Learn small things, like how to make a bed USMC style, how to shower in 2 min.(before the hot water is gone).

Just a few pointers

Hope you know what you are doing. If we still have war when you go, you will probably be on the front lines, no matter what they promise you! About the only preparation that I would suggest is to be physically fit to ace the basic training.

there are a few things you can start doing, like running, pull-ups and sit-ups. also going on hikes with a pack on your back could be helpful too. talk to your local recruiter and they will probably let you go to the pool functions where they help prepare their poolees to go off to boot camp.good luck and enjoy your time in. I did!
