Yes - if it is well maintained and especially if it has a standard transmission. I had 3 VW Golfs with 175,000 miles on them. I loved those cars and drove them pretty hard, too! All were 5-speeds.
The biggest concern with a convertible is how well the soft-top works and it it is still sealing properly. Test it out -- put the top down and up yourself and then get a hose and spray it down pretty hard to test that there won't be any leaks.

Hay U can't go wrong with a good old vw. Between me and my step-dad we have owned about 25 vw's in the past 8 years, I freakin love them. We have never had a beetle but i mean hay they have been around since the 30's and people still drive them everyday. And if u like convertibles I would suggest a Rabbit or cabriolet from the 80's. We have had 5 and they are good cars. They are little 2-door cars, front wheel drive and get great gas millage. And if you don't know what they look like then watch these movie's, SCARY MOVIE, SCAEY MOVIE 2, THE HOT CHICK, STEALING HARVARD, or MAJOR LEAGUE they all have convertible rabbit's in them.

I have owned vw's for a long time, right now i have a 03 Jetta TDI and the fuel ecomony is awesome, i can get about 500 to 700 kms in town and anywhere from 900 to 1300 kms on a single tank on highway driving. The TDI are amazingly reliable, all you need to do is keep up on the oil changes, never regualr oil only synetethic oil. My friend has a vw rabbit with 900 thousand kms on it with the orginal motor, trans. only major thing that was done was the clutch. Also if you buy new from a dealership, their warranty covers everything, from the key fob battery to the lights. So you're buying smart with VW!!!!

I've owned two VW's. They're good cars. Keep up with the maintenence and don't neglect it, and it will treat you good and run forever in return.
If you're getting a beetle, I'd suggest looking at the triple white new beetle. They are HOT!!

Went thirteen years and 545,000 kms....and it was still operable and safe when I 'disposed' of it (Drove it to a scrap yard and sold it) due to 'other' reasons.
But that was a jetta, the beetle I had-had, had some previous problems with as per the previous owners, so it was already many years old when I got it. But it ran well, sorta......

I would say that you need to maintain your VW often, oil change, send your car to service for every 5000 miles, it should last longer, otherwise if you didn't keep the car maintain, any car won't last long.
