This is like asking who would win a war between the US and England. It would never happen. Japan is one of the US's strongest allies and is also dependent on the US for its protection. Japan spends less than 1% of its GDP on military and almost all of that on defensive weapons. They probably have the best trained and armed military in Asia (China's is larger, but poorly trained and uses Russian hand-me-downs), but they it is still dwarfed by the US.
However, in your fantasy world, I'm sure if Japan had a renegade army it could kill 50,000 soldiers simply by firing all their weapons at the US bases they house. Their military would then be quickly decimated. Japan hasn't weapons that could hit the US, so the war would be over. Probably very few civilian casualties. But really, the chances of the US and Japan having a war are about the same as Mexico attacking Canada.

This would provide an interesting scenario. The Japanese Constitution's Article that says Japan renounces war also says that the United States is responsible to defend Japan if Japan is attacked. So if the US attacked Japan would we have to fight our selves? If not then Japan could be taken with a company of Marines. Japan is not that global naval power like they were in World War II, their armed forces are little more than a heavier armed police force and coast guard.

Since 1945 the US has been a protectorate of Japan as part of the surrender agreement.. Only, until recently, Japan has been reliant on the US to protect it in the event of hostilities or threats from other country's. N.Korea has prompted Japan to muscle up, just to protect itself from N.Korea's aggressive behavior and the reality of a rogue nation pointing nukes in it's direction.
It's doubtful that Japan will stop it's military build up just because N.Korea is doing nice, this week. We have watched this dog and pony show for over 50 years, first with Kim Jong Il's father and then with Kim Jong Il. Hopefully we aren't creating a monster with Japan's build up, and let's all pray that hostilities between the US and Japan were left in the last millennium.
Having a strong Japan as a military ally can only be positive for the US. It, along with S.Korea, Taiwan, and Australia make for a strong balance of power against China's military build up.
Hostilities between Japan and the US are highly doubtful. These two country's are strong allies, and depend on each others support for regional balance.

Ha Ha what a dreamer. The Japanese sit their war ships off the coast of Russia waiting for a Russian ship to sail into the Pacific just to mess with it. Now you want to know what a war between the US and Japan would be like? That's real funny.

Considering Japan, partly by their own governing laws, has very little military and especially nuclear. I believe America would win. As it stands however, Japan is actually a very important ally right now.

The Salvation Army could kick the Japs all over the pacific. I don't think they have forgotten about the two big bombs that dropped on their soil.
SO they are not in a hurry to piss the US off.

Since they are only allowed to arm to Defend and no offensive weapons I think it would be a short story. We have many bases over there with quite a bit of fire power and many soldiers in the far east, so deployment would be a non issue.
