could he possible be checking if im awake. I know its different then when he smells my mouth by how gentle he is about it. what behavior is this

My girl cat does it to me and my friends cat does it to her. I think it is some strange kitty thing. I could not find anything in a web search. It is almost like she sniffs me to make sure it is me. Strange little kitty

it is just his thing, like a kiss and possibly an i.d. thing or even a mood tester. any number of things can cause this unique behavior . I would however, not allow it. direct his attention to something else when he attempts to. to condense my many thoughts racing in my mind ...cats, believe it or not, put their noses into some very unsanitary places quite often and the eyeball is a very bad place to introduce unsanitary things into your body, not to mention a possible slip or scare and a claw in your eye. by all means show your love and share your love but just remember to always be careful with any animal around your eyes, even humans!

My cat does the same thing, usually because he sees my eyes moving and thinks they would make a great toy.

Cats have a gland on their heads, but their noses. Basically, it "marks their territory." Your cat is just letting you know that you are "his." It's also a form of affection. :-)
