A large savings bond- he will need it for college.
(yes I know.. not very fun.. but when he can afford his own apartment or pay for his books.. you'll be thanked a thousand times over)

A boy aged 17 has his own likes and dislikes and if you give him something that he doesn't like he will not wear it at all or only wear it once as a courtesy gesture. Ask him directly to tell you about 3 things that he will really like to have and indicate the price range. Everyone wins when you buy him what he wants, for sure your money will not be wasted.

Mine is about to turn 18. I always have him make a list to be sure that he gets something that he wants.

Our mall sells gift certificates that will work for any store in the mall. If you don't want to give straight cash, I would suggest a clothing, music, food gift certificate. Let him pick out exactly what he wants. :)

Does he like video games? X Box 360. If you have no idea, money is always a good idea to fall back on.

cologne, clothes, anything that has to do with some of the sports teams he likes, um, if he has a car and is in love with it, get him some car wash and stuff, thats what my mother in law did for my husband... um, cds of the music he likes, maybe an ipod if he doesnt have one, it all depends on what he likes...
