There have been a couple of questions recently asking where to get a 10Ga gun, and all of them have had someone asking, in the answers, the obvious question "Why?", so here I am asking it. Why a 10Ga? What do you use that much gun for?
I am not in any way criticizing, I own several guns, including some big guns for no more reason than they can be fun to shoot (Like my 8-1/2" .44 Magnum), but I can't picture situation, hunting, clays, self defense or anything else, that would make someone want to endure the punishment of a 10Ga shotgun....So, 10Ga people - What are you gonna shoot with that thing that makes it worth it?

I don't have one myself, but I think the impetus comes from waterfowlers since the ban on lead shot. In the old days, 12bores with 2 3/4" shells were fine, but steel shot stunk, and the newer substitutes, though better (and a lot more expensive), still require a lot more than lead, so your choices are to go longer or go with a bigger bore. It seems the 12 bores are soon to be chambered for shells as long as the barrel. When the 3 1/2" came out, it looked mighty odd to me. The other thing is the American "bigger is better" mindset. You'll note that there are lots of folks shooting 30 caliber magnum rifles at little whitetail deer, too.

For the people that can't hit a close flying bird with a 12 ga., so they can reach out further with more shot with a 10 ga.

Also for turkey hunting! They are a hard bird to get in close and a hard bird to put down!

Why the resurgent interest in .10 gauge shotguns? Answer: Because .8 gauge shotguns are illegal for hunting in the good, ole USA.
