Can you feel his ribs easily when running your hands over them? If not, he is overweight. My Akita mix (crossed with Great Pyrenese) was 155 at his death and that was about 10# overweight, but he had bone cancer so I was feeding him anything he wanted at the end :-( and he couldn't exactly exercise.

I would strongly encourage you to feed him twice daily (feed the amount recommended for his "ideal" body weight split into two meals). The two meals a day thing held decrease the incidence of bloat in dogs like Akitas who are prone to it. It's an easy thing to do and it can prevent an incredibly expensive and life threatening problem.

As far as thyroid testing... was it just a T4 that was checked, or was a whole thyroid panel checked (about 8 different thyroid parameters - University of Michigan is the best place in the country to send blood for thyroid testing, but check with your vet on this). T4 can be normal in some dogs when other thyroid parameters are out of whack (especially in Akitas who are prone to lymphocytic thyroiditis, an immune form of thyroid disease).

certain. I stated a small Korean martial artist do a touch strikes on a guy that I had merely considered practiced in varieties. He beat a guy 0.5 his age and two times his length. quite of creating use of them as strikes, he used them to adhere the large guy, push the large guy off stability, then began backhanding the large guy contained in the face back and back. It become the most suitable use of body positioning and angles that I easily have ever considered in a real wrestle. That wrestle become the significant reason I lower back to martial arts instructions as an grownup. The funniest element about it become no longer the wrestle, it become the martial artist's spouse. even as i do no longer communicate Korean, i imagine i'd note of even as a spouse tells her husband that she does no longer imagine he should be combating, by skill of body language and facial expressions. of route, a lot of you right here gained't believe this because you're confident that Taekwondo does no longer artwork, and that a small man or woman can't in any respect, ever, ever beat a large man or woman, no count number how experienced the small man or woman is.

I would cut out the wet food entirely. He doesn't need it. Nutro is an excellent food. So that's not it. Could be that he just a big boy!!!

Did your vet say that he is healthy? Overweight dogs are at risk for heart disease, heart murmurs, and diabetes! So make sure he is really healthy on the inside... and no ive never heard of an Akita getting that big.

If you want the dog to lose weight try to cut a little bit on the food and add some green beans. It does help alittle bit. I have a golden retriever who used to weigh 1007 pounds but he has started to lose some weight since we gave him green beans. He actually really likes it. He won't eat his food without grean beans anyomore.

Can you still slightly feel his ribs? To see if your dog is a healthy weight, you should be able to feel his ribs but not see them. If he is overweight you won't be able to feel them. According to breed standard, it looks like male akitas are usually up to 130 lbs., so if he is a healthy 160, he is pretty big.
