There all wrong. The air base in question was in Cebu a small island south of Luzon. I believe the base name was Sangely. I was stationed in the Philippines for 5.5 years, I should knkow this.

Probably you are reffering to Corregidor Island in the Philippines?.
Or can it be the Clark Air Force Base?. But it is located on the Philippine mainland (Luzon), and not on an island.
Just a comment for Joseph P. : you may be right. There is indeed Cebu island and an air-base on it. But the asker is referring to an island in the S.E. Philippines, and Cebu island is in the S.W..

Clark AFB on Luzon. Base was closed in '91.
