Hi, Vista is not a software for presentations. Maybe you are talking about MS Office 2007 and PowerPoint 2007. You can have Office without having Vista.
Vista includes some software for making videos and DVDs but Windows XP as well and are almost the same.
For scientific reporting you must be in need of Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Never upgrade to Vista. Use an ordinary PowerPoint or OpenOffice to do presentations, Vista doesn't have any better software. There is no way to keep Vista running smoothly, because a critical part of the registry is spyware. If those are removed, Vista will stop functioning. Use another version of Windows. Even DOS or 3.1 will be better! I reccommend using Linux.

I would wait at least six months before upgrading to Vista as your sole operating system. As of right now, XP is still a good operating system and has all sorts of programs to help you out with scientific experiments.
As far as hardware goes, for the best version and most graphically intensive, you'll need at least two gigs of RAM, high end video card and preferably a Core 2 Duo processor.

Brandon

Vista has too many issues right now. You might want to just wait. Besides, the upgrades are not that significant anyway so if you have XP, you should be able to make good presentations on PowerPoint or a program like it.

You don't need Vista to make school presentations. And if you have lots of research data, you best find a way to summarize it. Nobody wants to be bored with minutia in a presentation.
PS. Forget Vista.

From what I've heard, you shouldn't really upgrade to Vista unless you're going to be upgrading your hardware at the same time. The best way to get Vista and be sure that it will work with all your hardware is to buy a new system with it pre-installed.

I would stay away from Vista for another few months. While they are still working the kinks it consumes a lot of memory compared to other Windows OS.

If your PC is running WinXP without problems, don't worry about upgrading.
As for software, either get MS Office 2007 (Student edition) or look at OpenOffice.org, an open source, FREE alternative.

I would recommend using this as a great time
to jump OFF the Microsoft bandwagon.
If you want more reliable software that takes
better advantage of your hardware's performance,
try one of:
http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org
Openoffice has most of the features of MS Office, and
other features it doesn't have, and can exchange documents
with MS Office.
Oh yeah - and its free, gets better support, is more secure
and doesn't perpetuate a monopoly.
