Sometimes after the car sits for awhile, it will finally release and I can turn the car off and remove the key. If I leave the key in the ignition it will eventauly run the battery down.

No problem. I was one of the first techs to find this problem when GM could not. What it is is the shift interlock cable that comes from the shifter is staying engaged. This was most often found with a floor mounted shifter. Is that right, I mean do you have a trans. that is shifter from a lever on the floor and not the column? If that is true, there is a switch on the shifter that either grounds or sends power to a solenoid in the column that will allow the key to turn back the final inch or so. The only way to fix this properly is to replace the complete shifter assembly as GM does not have a switch you can replace, just a shifter with a switch in it. It's a major pain in the *** to replace this part, but it is the fix you need. If it is a column shift, you will most likely have the same interlock problem, but the switch for this will probably be inside close to the solenoid that releases the cable. Good luck and let me know if that fixed it.

And who has been suggestion replacing ignitions instead of fixing the real problem? If it was your mechanic, I'd suggest you find someone who knows a bit more about Jimmy. The key won't release until the vehicle is in park, and the little rod that allows it to release is probably bent just a bit. Fairly rare problem, and hard to find when it happens.

i agree with hangtrojanover and his answer, but also check the wiring at the connector at the shift interlock on the floor shifter i ve seen countless wires being broke there and intermittantly not making a good connnection.
