Soft-boiled eggs are typically cooked by placing the eggs in a pan of boiling water and then simmering for 3 - 4 minutes

A 7 minute egg is a soft cooked egg . A 10 minute egg is a hard cooked egg
Do not put cold eggs in boiling water it will crack the eggs .
Start with cold water , bring to boil , turn down a bit till it is just boiling , boil 7 minutes .
.
Drain & rince just a little with cold water , not a lot you don't want cold eggs
Crack all around the egg with a butter knife & lift off the top , scoop out egg & enjoy .

Timing depends on what altitude you're at. In most parts of England it was 4 1/2 minutes. Here in Switzerland it's 5 mins.
Pierce the blunt end of the egg with a pic and then place in boiling water. To test, life the egg out of the pan and, holding it away from the steam, count ten seconds. If it's properly cooked all the moisture on the shell will have evaporated.

I make a perfect egg by letting the egg come to room temp for a little while, add cold water and the egg to a pot, bring the water just to a boil, turn off the heat, cover it with a tight fitting lid, and let sit for exactly three minutes. Perfect every time

At sea level, from the fridge into boiling water, 5 1/2 minutes, at 6,000' elevation increase the time to 7 minutes.
Puncture the broad side with a pin before putting in water, will usually prevent the egg from cracking.

you can get all kinds of technical on this one, we still don't even know who came first, the egg or the chicken. But in my opinion, I put the egg in before the rolling boil, just before it is about to break surface in order not too break the egg. In this case we need to add seversl mins. to cooking time. Based on boiling temps. it would take approx. 6mins at boiling, (09-11 otherwise) for soft boiled, i would say 9 mins for hard, so add to that the time it takes to bring to a boil. Rinsing it in cold water is a sure fire way to peel the egg with ease. Cold water seperates the annoying skin from the egg, making it easier to peel.

I am very fussy about my soft boiled eggs as well
I get a pot of boiling water, and put the eggs from the fridge into the water. and leaved them in for 5 Mins and 20 Sec
Then I rinse them in Cold water for easy handling but is not necessary really, Just rinse to make the shell very warm instead of hot.
Also what is your elevation...I am at sea level, as you go higher up you will have to boil longer.
Why don't you cook 4 eggs, use my method and try one egg at 4 min, another at 4 1/2 mins, another at 5 min and another at 5 1/2 mins, and judge for yourself for ever and ever, which is best for you.

Into boiling water, 4 to 5 minutes, dependent on size. Like you, I hate runny white.
