I had a colonoscopy done last June. Took out 3 large non-cancerous polyps. The Dr. said he wants me back again this year, because he couldn't get a clear view of the entire intestine. He said I didn't "clean" out enough. I drank as much of that horrible Nu lytly(spelling)as I could tolerate(about 3 qts). I told him that if he wanted me back this year, I wanted the pills. He agreed to let me try them. I know two folks who have had the pills. They were OK with the "results". I've never talked with any one who has tried both to compare. Can anyone give me some advice as to pills vs. liquid? Also, the proceedure was a piece of cake(never felt a thing)but I was sick as a dog when I woke up, because of the anesthesia. That's one reason I'm reluctant to go back in just a year's time(considering the polyps were OK).

A word to Luminous...I had a COLONOSCOPY, not a colostomy! Being in the Medical profession, I would hope that you know the difference.

Well, the liquid works faster then the pills in my expereince and if you were sick after the procedure you need to ask the doctor to pre-medicated you with Zofran or Reglan a nausea medicine to help with the reaction to anesthesia. If you aren't worried about how fast the cleaning out of your system works, then I would go with the pills to avoid the taste of the liquid

Some people need more than a one day "prep" because they may have a large amount of fecal matter throughout the intestine. Since you say that your doctor did not get a clear view of the entire intestine, It is possible that some pre existing polyps were missed at the time of that colonoscopy. It is good that the ones that were removed were non- cancerous but i strongly agree that you have the follow up. This time do a 2 or even better a 3 day prep. Many gastroenterologists will advise at least a 2 day prep, especially in someone that failed, in the past to totally clear the bowel with a one day prep. 4 liters of the Golytly preparation should be consumed for two days before the procedure.I dont know what pills you are refering to, but there are many laxative tablets such as senna that are often used before the procedure.A really good mild but effective laxative is called Swiss Kriss and comes in tables or flakes available in many health food stores. Additionally, now that you have had polyps, it is time for you to make sure you kep the colon clean and flowing. The best way to do this is not by regularly using laxatives but by drinking allot of fluids, such as water and having adequate fiber in your diet.I make a very healthful beverage every morning and since i have been doing so,(over 10 years) I have had absolutely no problems with my health and my digestion and elimination is great. The recipe for the drink is :1 apple and 3 stalks of celery put through the juicer(such as Jack LaLanne juicer) 1 tablespoon of ground flaxsseed(available in vacuum packed bags in health food stores, or you can buy whole seeds and grind them in a coffee grinder), and 1 heaping tablespoon of Greens Plus(this is a green powder that contains many beneficial ingredients, you can check their website). Mix this all together and add about 1/2 to 1 cup of water depending on your taste.Drink this every day on an empty stomach and wait at least a half hour before eating. Before finding this drink I had many digestive difficulties including ulcers. it is really great! Anyway Good Luck!

The prep for the colonoscopy is HORRIBLE. I never tried the pills but I have to have another one a little later this year because like you they found polyps. Thank God no cancer. If your doc did not get a good look you need to have another test. There could be more polyps and some of them might not be the good kind. Be sure to remind your doc about the being sick from anesthesia. They have a med you can take to help with that. Remember nothing to eat after midnight so that you have nothing in your tummy to throw up.Good luck and let us know how the pills work for you.

I have had three colonoscopies, two of which I drank the gallon and the last one, I took the pills, I recomend the pills, hands down, the gallon is by far the worse choice. Some doctors will not prescribe the pills, some say the pill do not do a thorough job of cleaning one out, but if your doctor gives you a choice, the pills are the way to go, good luck!

The Nu-Lightly liquid didn't work on me because I was unable to drink enough of it to do the job. However, during my first colonoscopy about 15 years ago, I took the pills, and I was sorry I did. I had so much pain that I felt like I was in labor! I don't know why. If I ever have to do this again, I will have to demand a really strong narcotic for this amount of pain. It was excruciating!

For the prep conciser a 1.5 oz. of phosphosoda laxative taken in .5oz. doses every 10 min. with each half ounce drink 8 oz. of say ginger ale. Then repeat in 6 hours. This will provide an excellent prep without the "gallons."

For anesthesia ask that an anesthesiologist be present and ask for propofol. You wake up immediately and no nausea. But it is considered a general anesthetic and need expert administration and monitoring.

My neighbor had her colonoscopy reversed-- and maybe u could also. As a nurse I have changed those bags and it is bad. Ask about a reversal. It s possible and even with some intestines being taken out they can do a re-suction deal and hook u back up to have a normal bowel movement .Sweetie, try to get another opiion --just look at whs. going on in Walter Reed Hospital for our veterans. Disgraceful!
