This is a very interesting question, but I don't think there's an accurate answer for it because it really depends on WHO is studying the language.

I'm Egyptian, my native language is Arabic and I go to a German school. I started learning German in Kindergarten and now I can speak it fluently. In the 4th grade I started to learn English and for me personally it was pretty easy, easier than German actually and I'm more fluent in English than in German although I started learning German much earlier. One of the reasons for this is that I watch American movies and listen to music in English.
I also took French classes for 5 years, but I don't really speak it fluently.
But of all these languages I would say Arabic is the hardest to learn.

I think it would well depend on what your first language is.

If English isn't your first language...English would rank right up there as a very difficult language as we borrow so much from other languages and our vowel sounds are so irregular...for example...

"ar" has an "r" sound as in Car, Far, Tar...then how do you pronounce "War" ("or" sound)?

Why do you get in a car but "on" a train or airplane?

English is a very strange language unless you're a native speaker.

If English is your native language the Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Russian, Japanese and Korean would be the hardest for Americans to learn. Guessing among popular languages excluding Native American or African Native Tribal ones.

That question is almost impossible to answer because how hard a language is depends entirely on who is trying to learn it.

For example, Turkish, whose structure and grammar are very different from that of Indo-European languages, is terrifically difficult for an Englishman or American to learn to speak fluently, but would be relatively easy for someone from Azerbaijan or Kazakhstan, whose languages are similar to it. Chinese would be difficult for a Westerner, since meaning depends not only on the words you use but also on the tone of voice, but it would probably be easier for a Thai, whose language also has "tones". By the same token, English seems to be a harder language for Southern Europeans than for Dutch or Scandinavian people.

As it happens, I believe that, generally, English is one of the hardest languages to learn well; although its grammar is relatively simple compared to more inflected languages, such as Slavic languages, for example, the highly developed use of its idioms and its complex phonetic structure (especially British English) make it one of the hardest for learners to reach a standard where they sound like native speakers.

well, I think it's very difficult to say which languages are the most difficult. I think it depends on your mother tongue and at which level or age you are going to learn the languages. For example I'm an Iraqi person my mother tongue is turkmanish and i live in an area with kurdish majority( iraqi nothren city of erbil ) and I studied in arabic. I graduated from college of medicine which was in english. Then I studied in turkey. now i can speak fulently as if i'm a native speaker both kurdish and arabic and i'm very flunet in english and turkish and i know a little french of course in addition to my mother language turkmanish. it would be very easy for me to learn parsian, but i think it may difficult for me to learn for example chinees or korean languages.

I'd cast a vote that English, Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic are the hardest.

I'd give you one more, but my brain's malfunctioning at the moment.

- Mandarin Chinese;

- Japanese;

- Arabic;

- Greek;

- Brazilian Portuguese: described by the Brazilian poet Olavo Bilac "The last flower of Latium, wild and beautiful."

If you want to understand Mandarin but you have no clue exactly where to start then a course for Mandarin is the best online course for the newcomers because it truly begins with the basis.
