I think that was a good thing to do. It shows you are strong and will not tolerate that type of thing, it sets the standard early.
If he walks....he's not worth it and you'll meet someone better.

It's a good move. He may pick the other girl, but then you know and can move on. He may pick you. Either way, you are the strong one, and that's a good position to be in. How can you lose something that wasn't yours in the first place?
