We are just finishing with the drywall taping/mudding. We wish to texturize both the ceilings and walls (knockdown on the ceiling, orange peel or heavier on the walls). Do I need to prime the drywall before texurizing? I'm assuming it does need to be primed afterwards (before we paint on the new texture), but I've seen instructions that say both (either texturize directly on the drywall after mudding or prime with special drywall primer and then texturize).

Texture first...if you prime then texture you are just going to have to prime again!!! I've never seen it done any other way......Good Luck!!

No Primer is needed before texture. The mud you use for the orange peel or the nock down is the same on the tape. When you are done with the texture you should prime all of it and then select a specific color !

priming allows you to seal the drywall... if you are texturing the ceiling then you would use an oil primer and then latex paint but if you look around you will find a primer that does both.. Home Depot sells it its by Zinsser.... as for the walls depends on what product you use. Berh has a textured wall paint that you can leave as is or paint it no need for primer since its textured paint...

I would do the texture first. I recently did 'knockdown' through an entire house for my in-laws. I sprayed it directly over the new drywall. You'll use twice as much primer the other way.

Dont listen to Diane! No need to prime before texturing.
