Just be calm and let your husband take him in for the test. My 3 year old went in and did not cry at all with my husband.

I would take a favorite toy or animal along to hold. He/she can sit on your lap. Suprisingly most kids do better with blood tests then with shots so maybe they will suprise you. I don't agree with the not telling them I have seen this and then kids react even worse b/c they feel betrayed. You do not have to say anything days in advance, but sometime before you get to the lab.

Some ideas-
GIve him a cup of icecream (if the hosp. lets him) to keep occupied
Special day afterward works
have them take some of your blood too, to show him it duoesn't hurt
refer to it as a little tickle, and tickle him when they draw it
let him hold a toy or whatever
make sure they apply the number stuff and tell him they're painting it with the "magic paint"
give him a reward right after. Be it going to the movies, or taking him to McDonalds or toys r us.
good luck, but if you can, have it done to you FIRST, so he can see what happens, it always works ;-)

I took my 2 and 4 year olds for lead tests- we talked it over beforehand, explained what would happen. The calmer one went first. Reward at the end helped- in this case, stickers. maybe give him something fun to hold with his other hand. let him sit with you if he wants and you're calm.

first, be honest with him about what is going to happen and how it will feel. let him know that you understand that it will hurt, but that if he makes too much of a fuss, the nurses will feel bad. also inform him of behavior you will not tolerate such as screaming or fighting. let him know that he will be punished for this. i know this might seem harsh but children must learn to submit to necessary medical procedures. after all, as a pet owner, i expect my cat to act appropriately with the doctor, so if i had a human child, i would expect him or her to behave properly.

First of all dont tell him. Wait until just before the nurse does it to tell him. Then say he can hold your hand and squeeze if it hurts. Have him look at you not the nurse and tell him when the "pinch" is coming so he can prepare. No one likes surprises but he will worry himself over it so its better to not tell until just before he has to have it done.

Hold him on your lap and tell him that when you are finished that you and he are going to have a special day together. I did this with my son and he didnt even cry and said that it didnt hurt.
