Most important item would be any medication you may need on the flight or at your destination. Don't pack it in your checked luggage. I have lost luggage more than once, even on a short flight.
Take one clean shirt and pants in case of spills.
One pair of clean underwear in case of lost checked baggage.
Socks so you can take your shoes off and your feet are warm.
Book or other entertainment.
Snacks.
Toothbrush, deodorant and hairbrush in case of lost luggage.
Tie a sweater or sweatshirt around your neck or waist. (you will have to remove it through security).
Pen for filling out customs paperwork if you are flying international flight.
Money or travelers checks and your ID or passport.
Name of hotel and itinerary and all confirmation numbers.
Buy water when you are through security to take aspirin or any other medication on your flight.

We always carry everything on... for every trip... long or short. Of course, you have to pack light... and that's what we tell everyone... pack light.... if you forget something, you'll be able to get it there. Here is our basic packing list with the" amenities and necessities" we generally take: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/basic-packing-list.html Don't forget that you need to pack with today's security alerts in mind: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/travel-security-alert-packing-guide.html
Happy travels... even if you don't travel the world... just remember that life is a journey... embrace and enjoy it! http://www.mousetourstravels.com

Take moisturiser. Skin really dries out on flights. And bottled water, becuase its always annoying having to rely on the stewardesses to bring you a teensy little plastic glass if your thirsty.
If you're like me and you can't sit still, take something that can calm you down, like lavender essence.
And books/ magazines/ gameboy, obviously.
