The coating ? all the Microwaves I've ever seen were metal on the inside.

Although there are several people who would say no, as with all appliances and kitchen items that you use to cook food with; if it's breaking down...replace it. In my personal opinion why chance it? The same would apply for teflon coating on pots and pans. And even though several people don't mind it chipping off in their food, I have yet to run into a health official or scientist whom say it's healthy to consume.
Microwaves are not that expensive nowadays and I would hate to find out years later that any leaks from the mechanism, be it physical or air pollutant, led to any serious health issues later in life. Rule of thumb...since you know your microwave is detiorating, chances are if something does happen than the manufacturer has every legal right to tell you their warranty will not cover the usuage of an obviously improper usuage of their product.
Would you eat with a rusty fork and knife?

I should buy a new one, this could be a protective layer that is chipping off,so it could even be dangerous.
