I'm asking this as a serious question. I heard someone call a Christian a Bible Beater and wanted to know where this word come from. I'm not trying to be rude so please do not answer this rudely. And I am not trying to criticize Christians by this, so please don't criticize me either.

woody's more correct. It's a nickname for SOME christians.

A Bible beater, more commonly a Bible thumper in America, is someone who can't or won't use sources outside the Bible to back up what they say. They claim they only believe the Bible and nothing else. They say the Bible has no mistakes and that it's the only thing you need and you're a heathen for not reading it.

They more "beat" the Bible than beat the Bible into people's heads. They go up to someone, start tapping the Bible as though they're as holy as Christ, and tell you what a sinner you are because the Bible says so, and then they move on.

There could be three answers to this. One is that as a gesture to state the seriousness of what they are saying during preaching the gospel, they repeatedly hit the Bible with their hand. The other meaning is to metaphorically bash their flock over the head with the words of the gospel. A third meaning could be that they are bashing sinners with the word of God. The last two possible explanations, some might find mildly amusing. There are derogatory meanings here too. This points to the hipocrasy of some preachers and evangelists (described in the bible as false preachers and prophets) or that they are ramming the bible down peoples thoats (trying to dictate how people should live). Just like activists of various beliefs, lifestyles and political movements try to push their own ideologies on society.

I don't know if this answers your question but there it is.

I think its because they preach so hard and that tends to really upset some people i guess but its all truth and the word of God .They just dont see it any other way but fast hard preaching.Been to lots of those meetings in the past and they do reach folks.Bible beaters are straight from Gods word the way they see it.

It refers to people who "thump" or "beat" on a Bible for emphasis while discussing religion. No offense taken, either- you are only asking a question. But it is a denigrating term, a way of belittling Christians in a way most atheists would not dare to insult any other ethnic or religious group.

I believe it refers to overly zealous Christians (in terms of preaching and trying to convert others). It calls to mind one of those fire and brimstone preachers who scream out their sermons and pound the pulpit and the Bible while doing their sermon.
