Turning an infrared remote into a stronger one?

I've tried this multiple times.

Usually I would take the remote apart, put electrical tape over the LED, but I was confused on where the tin foil goes.

Can someone give me the steps to doing it, cause my remote sucks

get new universal remote control.
only thing you should watch out is to see that the brand of your product matches the one that is remote using, they are usually on the back of the pack.
the are not very expensive, max. 5$
