From sheffield the best ticket values are the MML tickets to St Pancaras, they can be as little as £15 each way. If you go via Virgin you will double your price. Go to your local maaned station that has access to an RJIS system or Tribute system so you can do a face to face with a person.
DO NOT book online unless you have no way of doing this. Working in the trade, so many people have their tickets come after the date and turn up at the station trying to get them. As most companies will tell you, if you turn up on the day, you will more than likely have to pay a full standard fare and claim it back off the internet company concerned.
Get there as soon as possible and get booking, you will have more chance to get the desired train relevant to your journey.
If all else fails you can buy a Saver ticket on the day as long as you are outside all peak time restrictions in the Morning and Afternoon.
Good Luck

Cheapest ticket I can find for you is £9 single, a Midland Main Line Advance C. This would be on the 11.27 am from Sheffield, arr London, St Pancras at 13.45. If you want to arrive earlier, you would have to pay £15.50 for a Midland Mainline Advance F on the 10.27, arr 12.51. I haven't looked any earlier, but would guess the prices will go up.

Go to www.thetrainline.co.uk and book your ticket there. Also if you're under 25 you could get a rail card. Depends on how often you use the train whether or not its worth it. You can book up to 6 weeks in advance for future ref. You might be limited now as to what times you can travel cheaply. Good luck!
