This could be a lot of things - anything from normal to very ab-normal.
First thing to do is back-up. Always back-up your important data. Always!!! Remember, it's not IF you'll loose data, it's WHEN.
Easy things to check for:
Did you recently turn on the Hybernating feature on Windows XP or Vista?
How much RAM do you have and has there been any pop-ups in the lower right corner of your screen that says that Windows is increasing the size of your Pagefile.sys?
How old is your hard drive? It could be that there is a bad sector and it's fouling up the rest of the drive.
Do a drive diagnostic, found in Start, Programs, Admin Tools, Computer Management.

Thry those steps first. But remember, when you're dealig with a hard drive that acting flaky, BACK-UP YOUR DATA ASAP!!
