Well, first you'll buy a ticket. If you pay by credit card over the phone, you should be prepared to take that same credit card to the airport (some airlines require it). When you buy your ticket, try to get a seat assignment (window, aisle, whatever you prefer). Check out http://www.seatguru.com to see if your plane is listed so you can find out which seat is best.
When you get to the airport (follow the signs for 'DEPARTURES / TICKETING') you will need to 'check-in'. Since you are flying internationally, you will need to be at the airport 2 HOURS before the plane leaves.
Check in serves two functions: 1) to get your 'boarding pass' that will let you get on the plane and 2) to drop off your luggage so they can put it in the cargo area of the plane. The ticket counter will put little tags on your ticket (you baggage claim tags). These are not really that important UNLESS they lose your luggage (which happens occasionally) so don't lose these tags. If you have 'carry-on' luggage, i.e. bags you will take with you on the plane to your seat (like a purse, laptop, backpack--something small) you will keep it with you and not check it in.
You will need to present a passport or other proof that when you get to the Phillipines, you have the right to enter (visa, visa waiver (if you are a US citizen), filipino citizenship / passport, etc--whichever applies to you). The airline won't let you on without it.
Now, with some airlines, you can check-in online via their website. This will let you print your boarding pass at home, and then just take the bags and drop them off at the airport (this saves a bit of time--you might want to see if you can do this).
Once your bags are checked and you have your boarding pass, you head to the security line. If the line is really long, I'd recommend getting in the line and heading through to your 'gate' to make sure you are there on time. If the line is a bit short, you can walk around the airport a bit, buy some food, etc. Some airports have food near the gates past security, some have the food outside security. To get through security you will need to show your boarding pass and a photo id (passport) sometimes.
Once you get through security, it will probably be between 5-15 minutes to walk to your gate. You can walk around, shop, go to the bathroom, etc. Remember, you are about to sit for 10+ hours on a plane so there is no need to sit at the gate.
When you get to the gate, they will have a ticket taker there helping people with last minute requests (if you didn't get a good seat, ask that person if you can change seats). Eventually they'll make an announcement to start boarding. First on will be the disabled, elderly, and people with babies. First Class will also get to board (but many of them prefer to board last). After that, the people in the back of the plane go on (last 10 rows). Then the next 10, next 10. They don't want to create a traffic jam so they go slowly.
Once you get on, put your carry on bags above your seat, or under the seat in front of you (if you want to get into it while you are flying). Say hi to the person sitting next to you. Buckle your seat back, lean back...and you are on your way.
Have a good flight.
