Alexander Adolphus Dumphries Henshaw MBE 7/11/1912 to 24/2/2007 was a test pilot during WW11. He was born in Peterborough son of a wealthy Lincolnshire family. He learned to fly at Skegness and Lincolnshire aero club in 1932, funded by his father who bought him a De Haviland Gypsy Moth. He won the Siddeley trophy in 1933 at 20 years of age. In 1938 he won the Kings cup with the fastest flying time ever flying at an average speed of 236.25 mph (a record that still stands.) He flew Spitfires in WW11 testing up to 20 a day. He was the only Pilot to perform a barrel roll in a Lancaster bomber a feat considered impossible due to the aircrafts size and relatively low speed. He married his wife Barbara (the widow of Count De Chateaubrun) in 1940 and they had 1 son.
He was awarded the Jeffrey Quill medal in 1997 by the Air League, and he became an honorary fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2003. He died at his home in Newmarket Suffolk.

H.Potter-fan's given a good synopsis. Had the pleasure of meeting him just once, many years ago, at an airshow. A very modest, unassuming man, he couldn't understand the fuss that people were making of him. Someone asked him about the famous Lancaster roll, and he really didn't see what the problem was. The aircraft flew fine, he had plenty of control authority, so he did it. Simple as that.

He was considered the best fighter pilot of WW2 who never flew a mission. He was the factory test pilot for spitfire production. A good source of information is the obituary in the daily telegraph. Look at www.telegraph.co.uk
